History
The "Department of German Language Teaching" was founded as a part of the "Foreign Language Teaching Department" at Atatürk Education Faculty". The teaching staff trainee teachers of the both language schools "Istanbul Atatürk Yüksek Öğretmen Okulu" (4 years) and "Moda Yabancı Diller Yüksek Okulu"(3 years) unite in "Alman Dili ve Eğitimi Anabilim Dalı". Later the department was supported by academic staff, and the trainee teachers with ÖSYS were accepted. Since 1995 the department was named "Alman Dili Eğitimi Bölümü" and after 1998 it was renamed "Alman Dili Eğitimi Anabilim Dalı". Atatürk Education Faculty is one of the oldest teachertraining institutions in Turkey. As a result of drawing from its distinguished past, and by means of continuous improvement and expansion, the Faculty has succeeded in becoming a leading school of its kind and one of Turkey’s most important sources of new teachers. With nearly 8,000 students and around 220 teaching faculty members, the Faculty is located on the Goztepe Campus, which is itself spread over a 15 acre site on the Anatolian side of Istanbul. The Faculty is home to a complex of buildings containing approximately 100 classrooms.

German teacher in preschools, primary schools and upper-secondary schools (high schools)
Specific Admission Requirements
Students who participate in YGS, LYS5 or MÜYÖS and have succeed can register at university. Afterwards a placement test under the students is made. According to exam results the students with insufficient language skills participate at German language preparation school. Whom who are sucessfull begin with the first semester at the Department of German Language Instruction.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
Formal education according to the legislation of higher education. In case of horizontal and vertical transition the transcript and program will be evaluate by a commission of the department. The commission compared the programs and courses and determined which courses will be accept. This is also applied for Erasmus students.

Profile of The Programme
The curriculum of the German Language Teaching Department is designed to help students acquire theoretical and practical knowledge relevant to foreign language teaching and gain critical thinking skills during the four-year undergraduate programme. Along with the undergraduate programme, Master’s and doctoral programmes are also available. Students who succeed in all of the courses in the programme and whose GPAs are 80 at minimum level can apply for those graduate programmes. The curriculum of the GLT Department has courses which cover field knowledge, general culture and pedagogical knowledge. The duration of education in the department is four years and the courses in the programme are instructed both at theoretical and practical levels and dimensions. Course language of the program is German.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
The graduates of German Language Teaching Department can work as a german teacher in all primary and secondary schools in which German is taught as first or second language. They can work in several fields or private sector which has commercial cooperation with Germany. They can work in various areas of tourism as well as in media and communication orientated institutions.
Access to Further Studies
Apart from the BA undergraduate programme, related MA and doctoral programmes have been organised and directed by the Institute of Educational Sciences. Transition to graduate: Undergraduate academic degree, ALES, Science Exam and interview Transition to Ph.D: Master's degree, ALES, UDS, Science Exam and interview.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Each semester for each course a midterm and a final examination will be done. Students who have not participated one of the examinations can participated in a repeat test only by submit a atest. The final exam must be passed with at least 40 points. The midterm exam will be rated with 40% (20% for project work + 20% for exam) and the final exam will be rated with 60%. After the second acamedic year must have a grade point average of 2. The rating system is based on relative evaluation system.
Graduation Requirements
The successful completion of the program requires to pass all the courses (this includes all theoretical and practical courses and the practical training program) of eight-term program with the grade point average 2 out of 4 (GANO).

Facilities
The main campus of Atatürk Education Faculty is located in a central location on the Anatolian side of Istanbul, one of the most important metropolitan cities in the world. Thus, compared to the students of other universities of Turkey, our students have the great advantage of getting much easier access to all kinds of social, cultural, educational and sporting activities. These opportunities enhance our students’ cognitive, affective and psycho-motor development. Our students can attend several universities in Germany at the undergraduate and graduate levels as well because of the agreements that our university has related to the ERASMUS programme: Cologne University, Berlin Humboldt University, Regensburg University, Bielefeld University, Weingarten Educational University, Koblenz-Landau University, Wuppertal University. Besides, our students can attend doublemajor programmes at our faculty. With in the framework of the Erasmus Program there are agreements for students and faculty exchange with eight universities in Germany, corporate cooperation with DAAD, with the Goethe-Institute, Academic Library, Computer Lab., Classes and Projections

3 To equip student teachers with effective communication skills, empathy and sensitivity related to intra-cultural and inter-cultural literature, anthropology, and social issues.

6 To equip student teachers with basic learning skills which are not based on memorization but based on reasoning, investigating and realizing connections between different concepts.
