History
Parallel to the 1998 reform movement "Restructuring the Faculties of Education" coordinated by the Higher Education Council, Biology Education Program was established in 1998 within the Faculty of Education. Program is nested within Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education.
Qualification Awarded
Upon the successful completion of the program, students are awarded with teaching certificate in biology education
Specific Admission Requirements
To have a secondary education diploma and to get required score in Math-Science-2 test in the Univesity Entrance Examination
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Profile of The Programme
The Marmara University Biology Education Program has a long history of training high school biology teachers. The program aims to prepare biology teachers who have strong undergraduate science and pedagogical background and reflective practice and critical thinking abilities. Language of instruction is Turkish.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Students who graduated from this program can work at public or private secondary schools as biology teachers or continue to study as academics at various universities. While most of our graduates work as biology teachers, some of them continue to graduate studies in areas such as botany, genetics, pharmacology and anatomy.
Access to Further Studies
Our graduates can apply to graduate studies in biology education or biology related other fields such as zoology, microbiology and anatomy. In order to be accepted candidates should meet the criteria identified by related graduate school.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
When calculating grades, %40 of the grade taken in midterm exam and %60 of the grade taken in final exams are used and 65 is the minimum grade to pass a course, Weighted Evaluation System is used. Each course has its on exam and assesment regulations. These are described in related courses syllabus. In some courses exams are in multiple choice format, while in some others open ended.
Graduation Requirements
In order to succesfully graduate from biology education program students must be succesfull at all the required and elective courses taken during the program and complete the required internship program.

Our program has student exchange agreement with Pädagogische Hochschule Weingarten University in Germany under European Commission’s Erasmus program. Our program is associated with following national and international associations: NARST, IHPST, FEAD (Turkish Science Education & Research Association))

1 Students will be able to acquire, apply and communicate a broad range knowledge in biological concepts to specific problems in coursework.
2 Students will be able to demonstrate an appreciation of science as an integral part of society and everyday life.
3 Students will be able to demonstrate a broad range of fundamental biological facts and theories.
4 Students will be able to organize and critically evaluate biological information and present it clearly in written and oral form.
