General Description ^
History
The Department of Science Teaching was founded in 1998 within the Department of Primary Education at Ataturk Faculty of Education and accepted students in the same year. The primary goal of the Department is to train teachers who have a sound understanding of science and have positive attitude to science and the program is committed to promoting scientific literacy. The undergraduate program consists of subject-specific courses including physics, chemistry and biology, pedagogic courses and electives. The program alsoaims to train teachers who can teach through innovative methods techniques and approaches. “Learning through action” has a special significance emphasized in all the courses in the program.

Specific Admission Requirements
Applicants of the bachelor program must have obtained a required standard score from Bachelor Placement Test-2 (LYS-2). 2. Applicants of the bachelor program must be a graduate from science and mathematics division of Secondary Education. Students must have successfully completed secondary education. Students must have enough score of MÜYÖS (Marmara University the examination for foreign students )

Qualification Requirements and Regulations
The Undergraduate program offers courses that can broadly be categorized as departmental (disciplinary) courses intended to address topics in science, general culture courses and pedagogic training courses. The program is of 4 years duration consisting of both the theoretical and practical aspects of science teaching.
Profile of The Programme
To train teachers of high responsibility in terms of knowledge and skills in science education. To train teachers who have a sound understanding of science and have positive attitude to science and the program is committed to promoting scientific literacy.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
They work as science teacher in the primary school 6., 7 and 8. grade under the Ministry of National Education. They work as a consultant in science education programs at the private and public education centers. They may instruct undergraduate and graduate courses at state and foundation universities.
Access to Further Studies
Students who fulfill the requirements of Bachelor's degree may apply to the Master programs. Applicants for graduate study at Marmara University are required to have Bachelor's Degree and Academic Personnel and Post Graduate Education Admittance Examination (ALES), that is centrally organized by Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). to take a written test and a verbal examination given by the academic unit.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
According to the examination, assessment and grading regulations, (http://www.marmara.edu.tr/dosya/mevzuat/yeni/mu_yonerge_basari_degerlendirme_v43.pdf ), each course is assessed via at least one midterm exam (composed of quizzes, homeworks and assignments) and a final end-of-term exam, with contributions of 40%, and 60% respectively. The AA is the highest grade and has a grade credit of 4.00, BA 3.5, BB 3.0, CB 2.5, CC 2.0, DC 1.5, DD 1.0, FD 0.5 and FF 0.0. Grades of AA to CC are pass, FF and FD fail, DD and DC is conditional pass.
Graduation Requirements
The students must complete the courses successfully (153 credits). Students who completed their courses (153 credits) successfully is entitled to degree in Bachelor of Science Education. Students who are successful from all courses and have at least 2.00 (0-4 scale) cumulative general perfornance average (CGPA) and above get undergraduate diploma of Primary Science Teacher Education

Facilities
2 Professors, 3 Assistant Professors and 4 Lecturers have been studying at the department. Students are accepted to second cycle program for 3 years. In addition to licence program, master's and doctoral programs are carried out. In these programs, teaching staff are provided by the Department of Primary Education. Our students have the opportunity for one or two semester training at a European university via ERASMUS programme. ( For detailed information, see the Marmara University LLP-ERASMUS unit page.) Student-lecturer-University cooperation and communication is very important for us. For this purpose, student representatives for each class are selected by the students again. The Department of Science Teaching also offers a double major program. However, our three students who are successful, eager to work and have high communication skills are selected as a part-time working staff for the department. There are three labs in which courses are conducted namely; physics, chemistry and biology. The Department has student exchange programs for both undergraduate and graduate students within the ERASMUS scheme.
