General Description ^
History
Our department, according to its program, is established at Institute of Ataturk Higher Education in a 3-year term in 1969 and opened as a free boarding with the aim of educating music teachers for primary schools, upper secondary schools and equivalent schools. The department, in the academic year 1980, changed to Istanbul Ataturk High School Teacher Training “Music Department” and it has been turned into University of Marmara Ataturk Faculty of Education, Department of Music Teaching since July 20th. Therefore, Istanbul Ataturk Training Institute, at the level of three years of higher education in 1969, was turned into Istanbul Ataturk Teacher Training High School 4-year higher education level “Music Department”. Afterwards, Istanbul Ataturk Training Institute reached University of Marmara Faculty of Education, Department of Music Education between the years 1982-1998. New regulations for the Faculties of Teacher Education have been started since 1998-1999 with the initiatives of HEC-World Bank. With this new application, our department has been incorporated with the Department of Arts and Crafts Education, with the name of “Department of Fine Arts” since 1998-1999 and currently, the department has been continuing as DFA Department of Music Education. The department, since it was founded in 1969, has played an effective and significant role for forming and developing Music education in Turkey through the target, Ataturk drew “issuing our national culture above the level of contemporary civilization”, and for the artist-educator qualified music teachers that the department trained, for the scientific and artistic works, expertise and consulting services and for the scientific and artistic activities.
Qualification Awarded
Music teacher candidates who graduate from the Department of Music Education program will teach music lessons for primary, elementary and vocational schools, and carry out the work of music education, and be entitled to become a qualified music teacher that can guide for their area.
Specific Admission Requirements
Elimination of individuals, who will receive professional music education, has been verified with the “Entrance Examination” that evaluates the features of musical competence of individuals. Therefore, for the student who successfully completes the DFA Faculty of Music Education program, “Entrance Examination Guidelines” have been created. Through this directive, elimination has been verified for the selection of the best ones among the candidates participating in the exam in terms of “musical features” and “general culture”
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
Successfully completion of upper secondary school or equivalent and entitled to receive diploma, Participating in University Entrance First Line Exam (Transition to Higher Education Exam THE), and exceeding the threshold test, Success for the ability tests of the Department of Music Education

Profile of The Programme
Department Of Music Teaching The Department of Music Education (DME, provides four-year bachelor’s degree training which aims to train music teachers for primary and secondary institutions. The students, who will be accepted for the program, have been eliminated by the “Special Aptitude Test” which determines the music competence features of the students. The program includes individual and group playing / singing activities. In the program, the piano is the obligatory instrument and beside the piano, an optional instrument (violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, clarinet, guitar, binding) can be chosen the lesson. As well as corporate information, musical creative work and experiments are included through the program framework. Apart from classes, seminars, panel discussions, conferences, practical demonstrations, instructors and student concerts, etc, in domestic and abroad activities are contributing to music education. DME program consists of courses on field knowledge, general culture and pedagogical formation. Education and training duration is 4 years and the course consists of both theoretical and practical activities. In addition, post graduate and doctoral programs at the Institute of Education Sciences are also offered. MISSION: In parallel developments in the world community in the 21st century, our aim is to train music teachers with high-quality art (music) education to creative, analytical thinking structure, researcher, open to innovation, a strong theoretical and practical knowledge structure and equipped with the lower-his instrument, and use a very good voice, prone-qualified, who can teach children and youth in and outside of school. Our mission is to train professional music teachers who can use their professional knowledge and skill according to the need of Turkey and train successful individuals equipped intellectual, emotional, physical and creative aspects of the highest level of competence and modern values. VISION: Providing education in line with contemporary values and international standards, our department is Turkey’s second teacher training institution and around Turkey and the world, it is one of the prestigious faculties of education. Line with this vision, it aims a strong university-alumni solidarity, cooperation existed in the world of education and the arts, academic and administrative staff that support their efforts to pursue goals and aims to become identical with the vision by all personnel of our department. In addition, in order to make this mission vibrant and dynamic, the aim is to create a culture of following the innovations, aiming life-long learning, individual and team work spirit in the national and international area –in our expertise area.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

Through this directive, elimination has been verified for the selection of the best ones among the candidates participating in the exam in terms of “musical features” and “general culture”. Each year 50 students are accepted through pre-registration and entry exam to the degree program. The candidates graduated from DME, can be music teachers in primary, secondary and equivalent schools that is affiliated to Ministry of Education when they pass KPSS test. Apart from that, they can work for DFA departments, State Conservatory, DFA members due to Rectors, Anatolian Fine Arts Upper secondary schools as general or branch teachers with the examination, as artist in the music ensembles (choirs and orchestras), Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Education and TRT specialists and music programmers. Some of the candidates work directly or indirectly music education for production and broadcasting companies, some of them work for various official and private institutions for the education of the music. While the candidates graduated from DMT can be music teachers in primary, secondary and equivalent schools, they can also apply for post graduate programs (instrument, voice, choir, music, writing, composing music education and school music education theories, etc.) and they can be employed as a researcher by higher education instutions.
Access to Further Studies
Depending on the Institute of Educational Sciences, the department offers post graduation and doctoral programs in the field of Music Education. Therefore, while the main purpose of the department is to train music teachers, it also aims to train experts in different fields (instrument training, voice training, choral, music theory and music-composing, writing training, etc) with post graduate and doctorate degree, scientist and artist-educators.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Mid-term exams are percentage of 40%, final exams are percentage of 60%. The students with grades AA and CC notes are successful and DC and FF are unsuccessful. In addition, the average grade should be at least 2.00 out of 4.00.
Graduation Requirements
The program consists of four years and eight semesters. Each semester, the students are required to choose courses with 30 AKTS and be successful. The students must attend the all courses %70. After all requeriments has been done the students can have graduated the music teacher diploma.

Facilities
At the Faculty of Education Department, there are 5 classrooms, 1 choir and orchestra hall, 20 computerized technology rooms that enables computer-aided musical studies labs, individual instrumental and vocal study classrooms and student training rooms. The students of this Department are able to use various facilities in order to practice their applied skills. They have access to an Orff and rhythm workshop, a multi-purpose hall, study rooms, a computer laboratory which contains a CD and musical notes archive, and a total of 38 pianos ( two of which are grand pianos). Furthermore, the Department is involved in various cooperative activities with foreign universities as part of the Erasmus Programme.
