General Description ^
History
Elementary Education Teaching Department offers a four-year program and trains students for becoming equipped and skilled elementary school teachers. Master’s program in this department first started in 1991-1992 as linked to Institute for Social Sciences has recently become affiliated with Institute for Educational Sciences. The doctoral program in Elementary Education Department started in 2000-2001 academic year. Currently, this department has 800 bachelor students and 28 faculty members in its structure.
Qualification Awarded
Students who successfully accomplished all the requirements of the department will be awarded with a university diploma.
Specific Admission Requirements
Students are admitted to program placement through centralised national university exam.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
For Non-Formal and Informal Education: Only second language learning (e.g. English, French etc) is recognized. There is an exam which can be signed during registration week, and students who has passed this exam will be exempted from taking Foreign Language courses. For Formal Education: Previous courses taken from other higher education instituions will be assessed in accordance with related Marmara University Legislation.

Profile of The Programme
The programme is a four year programme with eight semesters. The courses offered in the programme are from general areas, professional areas and culture based. The programme language is Turkish. The department has two professors, two associate professors, eight assistant professors, eight lecturers, and four research assistants. Also, there are total six research assistants coming from another department but assigned to teach in our programme.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
The majority of graduates works as a primary school teacher or administrator in the primary schools of national education , private schools or courses. However, some graduates continues his or her academic career with the domestic or abroad graduate training. And also, some of our graduates becomes research fellow, or faculty member in different universities.
Access to Further Studies
The graduates from this department may study masters and doctorate in Elementary Education Teaching Department in various educational instutions. Legislations issued by Higher Education Council (YÖK) of Turkey and the University applied is the bases for accessing and applying to further studies. However, briefly procedures given below are generally followed: For masters study: Bachelor's degree, ALES, Science Exam and Interview PhD Study: Master degree, ALES, UDS, Science Exam and Interview
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Assessment, measurement and evaluation is carried out by the Marmara University Examination Regulations. Further information can be reached from http://www.marmara.edu.tr/dosya/mevzuat/yeni/mu_yonetmelik_onlisans_lisans_v36.pdf Midterm is counted for 40% for passing grade, and final exam is counted for 60% of the passing grade. Current students' achievement scores for the course is calculated using relative assessment.
Graduation Requirements
For a student to graduate with a bachelor's degree and receive a diploma, the student should attend all the courses offered in the department and expected to be successfully accomplish all of them. Students overall weighted grade average (GPA) must be at least 2 out of 4. For detailed information on this subject, please refer to the relevant legislation delivered by Marmara University.

1 Students will possess proper knowledge in science, math, and social fields related to the students’ developmental levels.
2 Students possess adequate knowledge about the structure of the Turkish educational system and its historical development.
3 Students will have proficiency in following national and international literature in his/her field.
4 Students will possess skills in the proper, correct, and effective use of Turkish language and will acquire healthy communication skills with students.
5 Students will be familiar with developmental characteristics and learning styles of students at the elementary education level and, based on the acquired information, will be able to make effective planning and application.
6 Students will be familiar with the characteristics of thinking skills and fulfill teacher-researcher role through applying scientific thinking processes and steps in the processes of teaching and learning.
7 Students will be familiar with the features of information and communication technologies and will be able to apply them effectively in the processes of teaching and learning.
8 Students will be familiar with teaching strategies, methods and techniques and will apply them in the process of teaching and learning.
9 Students will be familiar with the characteristics of measurement tools which measure cognitive, affective, and psychomotor properties and will be able to develop tools and methods which can measure these properties with procedural and outcome dimensions.
10 The student is sensitive to democracy, law, and human rights as well as national and universal cultural features.
11 Students will be sensitive to nature, society and human beings.
12 Students appreciate the importance of art and sport in the lives of individuals and the community.
