General Description ^
History
Department of Social Studies Education started the academic year 1998-1999, depending on the primary section of Atatürk Faculty of Education. The aim of Department, the first students of it graduated in the end of 2001-2002 academic years, is to educate social studies teacher of primary schools. In addition, Department of Social Studies Education has master and doctor programs at the Institute of Educational Sciences. 1 Professor, 4 Associate Professor, 3 Assistant Professor, 1 Lecturer Dr. and 10 Research Assistants work there.
Qualification Awarded
Our students graduate as a social studies teacher. They have the opportunities to make a Minor and Double Major in Geography, History and Turkish language teacher programs. After completed a double major program, they receive a second bachelor’s degree.
Specific Admission Requirements
For Turkish citizen students: In order to register the program, it is required to be settled in TS1 of LYS (Graduate Placement Examination) made by ÖSYM or to transfer the program. For students coming from abroad: It is required to get enough points and to choose from MÜYÖS (Marmara University Foreign Student Selection Examination) organized by the Marmara University.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
Department of Social Studies students enrolled in the previous formal learning is recognized. The students completed any of the courses in the program as special students or the transfer students do not take the same course again. Foreign language exemption is as follows: If Turkish citizens get enough points from the Foreign Language proficiency test organized by the Marmara University, they will be exempt from I. and II.period foreign language courses. İf the students, coming from abroad, have enough points from MÜYÖS (Marmara University Foreign Student Selection Examination) Turkish test, Marmara University School of Foreign Languages Turkish proficiency test or Turkish test of TÖMER (Turkish Language Center) depending on the university in Turkey, they exempted from Turkish preparatory education for a year.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
Department of Social Studies Education has a program designed to train teachers. The program has both some practical courses like community service applications, school experience and teaching practice and theoretical lessons like social information, educational psychology, classroom management. Students, who completed the program successfully by continuing to the lessons at least %70 percent of theoretical lessons and %80 percent of practical lessons, are considered to fulfill the qualifying conditions.
Profile of The Programme
Department of Social Studies Education graduate program, aiming to educate individuals with academic and vocational qualifications, consists of courses related to field information, general culture and pedagogical formation. The standard of education and training duration of program is 4 year. However, in some cases this period may vary. The students whose General Point Average 3.00 or plus may take course from upper class and may graduate a semester early but the students do not competence lessons may graduate up to 7 years. The program includes theoretical and practical courses. Theoretical lessons are conducted in classrooms of the Department and it is supported by travels and observations on the issue. The place may vary where the practical courses done depending on lecturer' preference or purpose of lesson. For example, while Community Service course is doing in various social organizations and institutions working in İstanbul, school experiences course is doing only in primary schools. The students fulfilling the terms of program may benefit from receiving an upper class courses, entering minor or double major program. If they enter the double major program, they receive two diplomas. All of these other, master and PhD programs are conducted by Department depending on Institute of Education Sciences.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Students who graduate from Social Science Education Program work as a teacher of social studies in elementary schools. Also, they can teach the Democracy and Human Rights and History of Revolution lessons. In addition, our students graduated from double major program benefit from the advantages of working both social studies education teacher and the other programs where he or she graduated. The graduates of the degree of side branch can provide the lessons appropriating degree of side branches at the public or private institutions in which they work. Graduates often find position in their respective fields but rarely, they prefer to work in a different job. Those people pass in their respective areas after five years. One of the significant business opportunities for them is taking part in academic community as a research assistant who assigned by YÖK (Higher Education Council) under the ÖYP (Academician Education Program) at the universities established newly in Turkey.
Access to Further Studies
Students, who have successfully graduated from a degree program, if they fulfill the eligibility requirements of graduate programs, can continue to further studies. These requirements are published on university websites. General and special conditions specified in the announcement. All of the candidates who want to be academician must be entered ALES regardless of ad. Then, if they have special conditions they can entered scientific exam. The research assistants, assigned by YÖK within the quato of ÖYP, initiate to master or PhD program directly.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Students attending the program must be continued at least %70 of theoretical courses and %80 of practical courses to enter final or make-up exam. Students who attend the course enter each semester a midterm and a final exam. Passing grade is determined by taking of %40 of intermediate examination and %60 of final examination. Assessments of some courses are not only those examinations, assignments and projects can be made.
Graduation Requirements
Students who are enrolled in the program ensure that certain conditions in order to graduate. Some of these are as follows: 1. continue to theoretical and practical courses in the curriculum 2. cumulative grade point average be at least 2.00 3. complete lesson, practice and teaching internship successfully in accordance with the regulation 4. complete 240 ECTS

Facilities
Department of Social Studies serves two classes and a seminar room the whole projection. Also, it provides to students opportunities in their academic and daily lives. Students can get face to face counseling service on certain days of the week from an adviser of class or instructor. Also, 10 research assistants guide to students throughout the academic process. Faculty of Education in which Department provides services is built in the central area of Istanbul named Kadıköy. So, it provides a lot of advantages to our students. International libraries in which they can explore the issues of primary sources, classrooms and study centers providing job for them, variety of institutions and primary schools where they can carry out many research located nearby. Also, cultural activities held in common contribute to their development. Campus of faculty available our students some advantages. Firstly, it has two libraries with a comprehensive literature review. These libraries offer student a decent working environment and an extensive literature. Students also benefit from decent cafes, mess hall that offers lunch and dinner very convenient and healthy way, gym, student dormitory and much more on campus. Department, serving with 1 Professor, 4 Associate Professors, 3 Assistant Professors, 1 Lecturer Dr. and 10 Research Assistants, attaches great importance to the national and international scientific studies. II. National Primary Stage Student Congress was organized by Department to direct young people in science on 13-15 December 2011. This congress brings together graduate students in Turkey into the academic feast. Further, International Symposium on Social Studies Education with participants from around the world was realized on 20-22 April 2012.

8 Students will be able to raise awareeness of pupils about the main elements and processes of Turkish history, culture, and protection and development of cultural heritage.
9 Students will be provided with an undestanding of the main elements and processes which construct world history.
10 Students will be able to give pupils a perception of the interaction between the human being and the environment in local and global levels.
11 Students will be able to have pupils comprehend the effect of economic activities and developments on societies.
12 Students will encourage pupils to comprehend the main factors upon which the Ataturk principles and reforms are based ; the meaning of the Turkish reform history and the effects these had on the political, social and cultural development of society.
13 Students will be aware of the concept of a democratic society and human rights and which people get inborn and responsibilites towards individuals, society and humanity.
14 Students will be able to channel self development and career development with Social Studies education.
