General Description ^
History
Our department; Education of Mentally handicapped received first student’s in 2002-2003 education year, and gave first degrees in 2005-2006 education year. Since 2010-2011 education years evening classes have began for education services.
Qualification Awarded
Students who successfully completed education of mentally handicapped program get the degree of teacher of the mentally handicapped.
Specific Admission Requirements
Our department, receive students with the university placement examination which is conducted by OSYM. Our department had a quota of 57 students who were accepted with YGS-4 point type, in 2011-2012 education year, have been continuing education activities.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
Our department also received students from other university programs with student transfer. Students who apply for transfer should complete at least two terms with succes from all lectures, and a GPA of 3.00 from 4.00 in their programs. Our department receive three students at 2nd year, and three students at 3rd year with a total of six students by student transfer.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
In order to a student to get his/her degree from our department, he/she must complete successfully all the lectures presented with relative evaluation system. A total of 150 credit is needed a for a student to get the degree of teacher of mentally handicapped.
Profile of The Programme
The aim of the program is to train special education teachers who can give individual or group education, plan special education and related Services, implement and watch programs. In the first year, in order to equal the level of general education knowledge to the same level, lectures about Educational formation including Introduction To Psychology, English I, Turkish I, History of Turkish Republic, Computer, Individual Differences and Psychological Aproaches, Health Knowledge and First Aid are given. Also lectures; Introduction To Special Education and Mentally Handicapped and Their Education gives opportunity to field of special education. 2nd year lectures are; Changing Attitudes Towards Handicaped Individuals, Early Childhoood Special Education, Applied Behaviour Analysis, Drama in Special Education, Creavity and development, Behavioral and Educational Assesment, Instruction of Concept and Skills For Mentally Handicapped , Mathematic Instruction For Mentally Handicapped, Painting – Working Instruction For Mentally Handicapped, Social Science and Life Knowledge For Mentally Handicapped, Mainstreaming and Support Services in Special Education, Individualized Education Programs, Norological Bases of Learning, Creativity and it's development, Gifted children. 3rd year lectures are; Reading and Writing Instructions, Instruction of Social Skills and Daily Life Skills For Mentally Handicapped, Music and Play Instruction For Mentally Handicapped, Class Management, Individualized Education Plans and Individualization of Instruction, Science Instruction For Mentally Handicapped Children, Specific Learning Disabilities , Turkish Instruction for Mentally Handicapped, The Scientific Research Methods , Community Services, School Experience and Observation of Alternative Placement Options in Mainstreaming, Multiple Handicappeds, Children with autism, learning disabilities 4th year lectures are; nstruction Technologies and Material Development for Mentally Handicapped, Legal Issues and Special Education, Material Development for Mentally Handicapped Chidren I-II, Vocational Ethics and Legal Issues, Vocational Training for Mentally Handicapped, Guidance, Teaching Practice I-II, Parent Education and Guidance, Environment Education, History of Science, Turkish Educational System and School Management .
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Graduates from the education of mentally handicapped, can work in public or private sectors in related fields. In Public or private sector, graduates primarily work in schools or centers which service to people with mentally handicapped under the authorization of ministry of education. Also students can continue their education at graduate levels and work as assistant.
Access to Further Studies
Graduates of teacher education of mentally handicapped program can apply to our department’s MA program and other universities’ special education and special education related MA programs (Psychological Counseling and Guidance, Language and Speech Disorders, Measurement and Evaluation in Education, Pre-School Teacher, Classroom Teacher, Developmental Psychology, Education, Adult Education, Education Management and Control Programs, and etc.).
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Students are evaluated with relative evaluation system, level of performance is determined by the spread of other scores in that lecture. Level of performance is presented with grades (AA-FF) according to the standard deviation of the scores of students' scores. 40 % of mid term and 60 % of final scores effect the evaluation of performance of the student. Students must attend to lectures, practices and exams. Attendance is followed by the lecturer. For every semester, a mid term and a final is conducted. Mid term and final dates are announced by the department. Students who can’t attend to exams because of a excuse, can receive an excuse exam, if their excuses are accepted by faculty. Besides exams; assignments, presentations, quizzes and etc. can be used to evaluate the performance of the student in that semester. The effect of these activities to the grade is announced at the beginning of the semester by the lecturer. Evaluations which doesn’t require mid term-finl exams are determined by the lecturers. The grades are determined by the assignments, reports, presentation and etc. Student’s performance is determined by the Grade Point Average (GPA) which is calculated at the end of that semester and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) which is computed by the 2nd semester and combines the total of all semesters. CGPA is determined by the sum of multiply of credits with equivalent of grades, which are scores and divided to the total credits. Both GPA and CGPA are determined with the addition of grades from AA- to FF to evaluation. A student with a CGPA at least 2.00 is considered to be successful if any his/her lecture grade is not FF or FD. Students with a CGPA less than 2.00 is unsuccessful. Beginning with end of the second semester, in his /her to receive from upper classes, he/she must have CGPA of at lest 1.80
Graduation Requirements
At least eight semesters of full-time study must be completed while enrolled at Marmara University. All students are required to successfully complete the designated program of courses meet a minimum of 150 ECTS credit requirement and have a minimum GPA of 2,00/4,00, no FF or DZ grades.

Facilities
For the use of Teacher Education of Mentally Handicapped program, one classroom for 55 students, one classroom for 46 students and a seminar room is at service. Both classrooms have projection system. 12 computer labs are in the service of faculty students for internet use. Also a library is in the service for faculty students. With the Erasmus program which our university enrolled in, student mobility is possible with abroad universities’ special education program (Stockholm University). Our department have a special educator club which is formed by students, aiming to plan social activities about special education field, developing projects, meeting the specialists with students, and developing awareness about the field. Students can use the dormitories, refectories, social and sport facilities in the campus. All graduates are deployed at the first year of their graduation to public or private institutions which service to mentally handicapped people,
