History
Faculty of Dentistry was found with the name of İstanbul Private Dentistry High School in 1962 by Murat Barıştıran. Faculty has got into action in November 1963 at the building in Şişli with the leading of İstanbul University academics Prof. Dr. Sadi Irmak, Prof. Dr. Sıtkı Velicangil and Prof. Dr. Suat İsmail Gürkan. Prof. Dr. Suat İsmail Gürkan was appointed as the first headmaster. İstanbul Private Dentistry High School has moved to its new building at Nişantaşı in 1965. Ast. Prof. Oğuz Baz was appointed as headmaster years between 1965-1972. Academic education time were increased from 4 to 5 years with 1969 Faculty Regulation and internship system was put into practice. In July 9 1971, faculty was nationalized with law code 1472 and joined to İstanbul Economic and Commercial Sciences Academy and the named changed to Dentistry High School. Prof. Dr. Suat İsmail Gürkan was appointed as headmaster years between 1972-1978. Since August 1976, Education and Examination regulation was accepted exactly as in İstanbul University Dentistry Faculty and a parallel education system was approved.Prof. Dr. İlhan Çuhadaroğlu was appointed as the headmaster in February 15 1979. Prof. Dr. Cengiz Oktay between years 1979-1980; Prof.Dr. Faruk Or between years 1980-1981; and Prof. Dr. Bülent Başaran between years 1981-1982 had served in headmaster position. Dentistry High School was joined to Marmara University in July 20 1982 and named as Marmara University Dentistry Faculty with the law code 2547 on November 6 1981. Prof. Dr. Nesrin Emekli between years 1992-1998; Prof. Dr. Övün Güvener between years 1998-2001; Prof. Dr. Funda Yanıkoğlu between years 2001-2004; Prof. Dr. Selçuk Basa between years 2004-2007; Prof. Dr. İlknur Tanboğa between years 2007-2011 had served in dean position and Prof. Dr. Mahir Günday was appointed and serving as the dean since 2011 recently.
Qualification Awarded
Students accomplished all courses, curriculum and clinic internship in success is awarded licence degree in dentistry. Graduates denominated Bachelor of Dentistry.
Specific Admission Requirements
The faculty of dentistry accepts students every year who have high school diplomas and meet the legal and academic requirements put by the ÖSYM (Higher Education Council Student Selection and Placement Centre).

Qualification Requirements and Regulations
First qualification requirement is to have a high school degree.Related year’s ÖSYM (Higher Education Council Student Selection and Placement Centre) minimum score should be achieved. Phsical and psycological condition should be reported with Health comitee report approval.
Profile of The Programme
Licence education program is consist of five years of professional education and one year of foreign language education (English). In the first two years of education students take lessons of basic medicine and dentistry sciences with preclinic lessons developing profession abilities. Two years of clinic internship increased to three years for purpose of gaining more practice before graduation. Fourth and fifth grades are the grades that advanced clinic education, dentistry profession lessons and lessons of medicine is taken. Integrated Clinic internship system is put into practice for the fifth grade students since 2005 and Multidiscipliner Clinic came into service with this purpose. Our Faculty, which gives globally competitive education in a wide selection of fields, is available for foreign students in master or PhD degree programs.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Graduates can administer in public or private practice. Graduates may go in for Examination of Specialism in Dentistry to become a specialist or carry on with an academic career.
Access to Further Studies
The graduates having Licence Degree in Dentistry may apply to third cycle programmes (Master of Science (M.S.), Doctor of Philosopy (Ph.D.)) in Dentistry discipline which offered by Graduate School of Health Sciences after taking ALES and UDS examinations. Graduates may go in for Examination of Specialism in Dentistry to become a Specialist Dentist.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
All the courses are set up as yearly. As well as 2 mid terms and 1 final exam for yearly courses is needed to pass the lessons, internship success of the related lessons are also a requirement. %40 of mid term exam and %60 of final exam is counted for the 60/100 success score.
Graduation Requirements
Graduates should have a GPA of minimum 2 over 4 and have prepared all other documents related with graduation.

Facilities
Education period of our faculty, which accepts over 100 students (6-7 of which is foreigner) a year, is 5 years after 1 year of foreign language (English) preparetion class. Faculty members are continuing the education, patient treatment and research activities at 8 different departments Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral and Maxillofacial Prosthodontics, Periodontology, Orthodontics, Pedodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics. All education needs of our students and researchers are faciliated with our contemporary Phantom laboratory, four Research laboratory in Basic Medicine Sciences Department, library, LASER unit, preclinic laboratory, prosthodonthy laboratory, research and development (R&D) laboratory and a general anesthesia unit.
Key Learning Outcomes ^
1 Basic medical and dental theoretical courses can be integrated into clinical practices.
2 Patients can be evaluated systemically and complications associated with some systemic diseases can be prevented or treated.
3 A thorough assessment of suitable dental equipment and materials, and making sure that aseptic protocols are followed.
4 By following modern technological advances, staying up-to-date with new treatment protocols and correcting past mistakes; can raise experienced and self-ameliorating.
5 Being capable of communicating with patients from every age, race , socioeconomic background and etc. Also following general and vocational ethical values and understanding the requirements of patients.
6 Communicating with other medical disciplines to collaborate as a team practice on diagnosis and treatment of some complicated cases.
7 Clinical and radiological diagnosing of diseases of the oral and maxillofacial region, performing prophylactic and therapeutic treatments while keeping the growth and development of the patient in mind.
8 Depending on the case, being able to reconstruct hard and soft tissue defects of the oral and maxillofacial region or refer to palliative treatment.
9 Being capable of arranging and executing an interdisciplinary treatment plan that is contemporary and up-to-date while considering the patients esthetic and functional needs.
10 Being able to make a reliable diagnostic and treatment plan as part of creating dental solutions and to be able to perform practices based on reasoning
11 As a “Dentist” having the ability to perform individual practice, to be able to make decisions about treatment by using related diagnostic methods; to be able to take the initiative; to be able to express his/her oral and written professional ideas; fully and openly.
12 In the awareness of being a “physician”, to be able to perform the ventures and practices that retain the general health of the public and individuals foreground aside from dental treatments.
13 Being able to perform “Protective Dentistry” applications at the clinic and also to endorse the national and international dental health program and projects by attending them; also to be able to lead and inspect these projects by developing the necessary knowledge.
