General Description ^
History
It was first established as a private school named “Istanbul School of Pharmacy” in 1963 and affiliated to “Istanbul Economic and Commercial Sciences Academy” in 1971. It took the name Marmara University Faculty of Pharmacy on 20.07.1982 and moved from the Nişantaşı Campus to the Haydarpasa Campus in 1990. In the Faculty, students are trained to be qualified pharmacists who will meet the pharmaceutical services of the community, pharmaceutical industry and the hospitals.
Qualification Awarded
The graduates who successfully complete the 5-year program are given the title of pharmacist.
Specific Admission Requirements
OSYM - Conditions and explanations regarding Higher Education Programs (see 14) detailed in “Guide for Higher Education Programs and Quotas”, Tables 3A, 3B and Table 4. In order to be successful in this program it is important for the students to be able to use their hands and fingers effectively, as well as to have visual ability.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
According to the Higher Education Legislation formal education is performed. Student transfers from another faculty of pharmacy can be done upon the decision of the board of directors according to the quota set by the University. Transfer students may be exempted from the courses, if the content of the courses they have taken at their previous training is equivalent to that of the existing courses in the program
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
Students who successfully completed the theoretical and practical studies and the mandatory training; and who scored at least an average of 2 (over 4) according to the Marmara University Undergraduate Regulations are entitled to receive a diploma.
Profile of The Programme
At the faculty, courses are taught to raise students as future pharmacist who will work at various areas. The education program is organized as compulsory-elective theoretical lectures, laboratory and internship/training applications, to include the new clinical aspect of the pharmacy profession, as well as to cover the basic functions of pharmaceutical technology. At the faculty, students are provided with a wide range of patient-centered education, besides the fundamental theoretical and practical education based on the manufacturing, control and marketing of the natural and synthetic drugs. In addition, the students are provided with theoretical and practical education on cosmetology and clinical pharmacy. Besides the theoretical education, pharmacy education involves a very large extent of practical education that takes place as trainings at community pharmacies, hospitals and drug industry. The intense social interactions of the pharmacists necessitate the students be equipped with skills acquired from the courses such as psychology, communication skills, accounting and different culture courses.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Today graduates of the pharmacy faculties have the change to perform their careers at different areas. Pharmacists are most frequently (self-)employed at community pharmacies, pharmacies and clinical laboratories of health-care facilities. At the aforementioned work areas pharmacists serve as drug information providers and have considerable contribution to therapy as well as the facility. Pharmacists may also work at the manufacturing, quality control and marketing departments of the drug and cosmetics industry; or at drug or food control units; or at manufacturing and marketing of various health-care devices. They can also work at manufacturing and marketing of biological and natural drugs and cosmetics. In the future pharmacists in Turkey will have opportunity to perform their profession at nursing-homes and home-care systems. Military pharmacy is also an other area of the profession.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
The final score is the sum of the 40% of the in-term assessments (mid-term exams, assignments, projects, etc) and 60% of the end-term assessments (final exams, assignments, projects, etc). At the discretion of instructor” method of calculation utilizing the letter system is used for the calculation of the grades.
Graduation Requirements
Students who have fulfilled all requirements of the 10 semester-program successfully, who have completed training succesfullay, who have presented final project suyccesfullay and whose GANO is equal to or higher than 2 deserve to receive their diplomas.

Facilities
In order to strengthen the education and training of the students participated in the program, the students’ interaction on national and international levels will be allowed. By establishing international co-operation with universities and research institutions through relevant programs such as the LLP/Erasmus Program, the exchange of students will be allowed to support the continuous development of education. Students will have the chance to take courses from different disciplines. Our students will have the opportunity to conduct their practical courses at student laboratories, as well as at various services and the pharmacies of hospitals, community pharmacies, various departments of the pharmaceutical industry and at other approved institutions. The students are able to follow current professional computer programs at the multimedia computer laboratory of the faculty. Theoretical courses are done at the Amphitheater 1-4 and Classrooms 1-3 of the Faculty located at the Haydarpasa Campus.
Key Learning Outcomes ^
1 Students will graduate as individuals/pharmacists who are aware of the history of our nation while being equipped with the modern universal knowledge in keeping with the principles of Atatürk.
2 Students will demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of physics, chemistry, mathematics and statistics and be able to apply these principles to biological systems
3 Students will demonstrate a knowledge of the basic concepts, principles and methods of medical biology and genetics; they will be able to apply this knowledge to different areas of technology
4 Students will demonstrate a knowledge of the anatomical structure of the human body, the physiologic principles of human biological systems and the biochemical and immunological processes that take place within the human organism. In addition, they will demonstrate the ability to apply this knowledge in describing the general pathophysiologic processes by utilizing clinical biochemistry knowledge.
5 Students will demonstrate an understanding of pharmaceutical and medical terminology; they will be able to demonstrate a knowledge of medical instruments, equipment and supplies; in addition they will be aware of the physicochemical properties of the active ingredients of pharmaceutical formulations and the products manufactured with pharmaceutical biotechnology/technology. In addition, they will demonstrate a knowledge of cell therapies and the nucleic acid drugs manufactured by advanced technologies, such as recombinant DNA technology
6 Students will be able to identify methods for the synthesis and development of new chemical compounds suitable for therapeutic use; they will be able to demonstrate an understanding of drug metabolism and biological properties, as well as the structure-effect relationships that are present in the drugs on the market
7 Students will be able to identify certain medical herbs and herbal drugs; they will be able to demonstrate a knowledge of herbal therapies, medicinal teas and the active ingredients of plants; they will be able to cultivate natural products for medicinal use (plants, fungi, algae, etc).
8 The students will dmonstrate a basic knowledge of diseases and medical conditions and have an overall knowledge of the stages that drugs undergo within the body, the mechanisms of drugs, their adverse effects and the factors that can alter the efficacy of the drug; in addition, students will demonstrate a knowledge of the toxic effects of the drugs and the chemicals, and the treatment for these toxicities
9 Students will be able to use the Turkish language properly, and be able to speak and communicate effectively, developing themselves along with their individual social and cultural interests. They will be able to identify and resolve ethical dilemmas that may develop in professional practices and carry out their duties in accordance with legal and ethical standards
10 The students will be able to describe the basic principles of clinical pharmacy and demonstrate knowledge of clinical pharmacy and skills that aid in rational drug-use, which is the core of patient-oriented pharmacy practices and pharmaceutical care in any area of pharmacy practice.
11 Students will be able to take on responsibilities in various areas of the pharmaceutical industry, such as research and development activities for the synthesis of active ingredients and the manufacturing of pharmaceutical dosage forms, quality-control, regulatory affairs, patent and medical management
12 Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the basic sentence structure of a foreign language and be able to read professional journals and text-books written in a foreign language.
13 Students will be able to retrieve, analyze, interpret and convey professional and scientific literature that is concerned with drugs and medicinal products, as well as legal information regarding professional practices.
