General Description ^
History
The German Language and Letters Department at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of Marmara University was founded in 1984. The first students were enrolled in 1992. Starting from 2005, German Language and Letters Department signed double major diploma and minor certificate protocols with Turkish Language and Letters, History and Translation and Interpreting (German) Departments of Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Our Department is also an active member of LLP/Erasmus Exchange Program since 2004.
Qualification Awarded
Philologist. Baccalaureate degree.
Specific Admission Requirements
Applicants for undergraduate study at Marmara University are required to take a written entrance test, First Cycle Placement Test (LYS), that is centrally organized by Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). At this the students have to take the foreign language test in German. Transfer Procedure: Students who are registered in German Language and Letter Departments of other universities in Turkey are able to apply to our department based on their grade point average.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
Our students are exempt from foreign language exams. Students who are registered in German Language and Letters Department of another university in Turkey are able to apply to our department based on their GPA and quota of our department. If such students are accepted, they may be exempted from some of the courses they have succeded in the previous university based on the decision of the Commission for Exemption and Administrative Board of the Faculty.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
Students who succeeded in all the courses of the program will graduate at the end of 4 years of education. They have to achieve a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00/4.00. At the beginning of the 3rd or 5th semester, undergraduate students with a minimum GPA of 3.00/4.00 are allowed to attend double major or minor major programs offered by the related departments depending on the quota.
Profile of The Programme
The studies of German Language and Literature last 4 years. The students will be highly provided with linguistic and literary knowledge. The curriculum consists of compulsory and elective courses. The elective courses are left to students’ option. These can be interdisciplinary courses or courses which will expand the students capacities and skills and are offered in the third and fourth year of the curriculum. A graduation thesis is not requested. The students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to pursue international scholarship programs through Erasmus Student Network. ‘Very successful students’ with a GPA of higher than 3.00 are offered the chance to get a second diploma or certificate in Turkish Philology, History and Translation (German-Turkish). The academic personnel consists of 1 professor, 3 associate professors, 1 assistant professor and 3 teaching assistants.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Recent graduates of German Language and Literature are working as teachers in private schools, translators, editors, creative writers and literature reviewers. The graduates who have also completed the pedagogical courses find jobs in the field of education as German teachers at state schools. Our graduates are also working as advisors in private companies and in the sector of culture and tourism. Our graduates are preferred by airline and international exhibition organisation companies. Some of our graduates are working as teaching and research assistants in distinguished universities of Turkey.
Access to Further Studies
German Language and Literature department offers graduate degrees (M.A. and Ph.D). Students with an undergraduate degree may apply for the graduate programs. The acceptance of the applicants are ruled by the Institute for Social Sciences. Applicants have to attend the ALES exam that is centrally organized by Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). Depending on the quota, undergraduate GPA, Scientific Examination and an interview are taken into account for the acceptance of the applicant as well as the score of the ALES exam.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
For the evaluation of each course, a semester-evaluation and a final examination is held and scheduled by the instructors in the relevant dates of the academic calendar. Evaluation of the semester includes a midterm exam, homeworks. Each evaluation is based on a 100 grade system and overall semester-evaluation grade has a 40% contribution to the overall score. Final examination is based on a 100 grade system and the grade contributes 60% to the overall score. No second final exams are given. Marmara University uses Relative Grading System and a grading scale of 4.00. At the end of the semester, all grades given over 100 are transferred to Relative Grading System (BDS). Graduation Requirements
Students who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum (240 ECTS Credits) and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00/4.00 may graduate. Students who have succeeded in all the required courses but have a GPA of less than 2.00 are not allowed to graduate. However, these students may be given the chance of following the third and fourth year courses that they select and approve their scores and overall GPA. Students who have only one failed course prior to graduation are given a chance to enter an exam for that course. Double major diploma or minor certificate are not given to students who have not achieved to graduate from their main major. On the other hand, diploma of the main major is given even if the double major or minor certificate requirements are not fulfilled. Minor certificate can be given to students who have not fulfilled double major requirements but fulfilled the minor requirements. Turkish and English diploma suppliments are given to graduates together with their undergraduate diploma. Facilities
The students can take advantage of the opportunity to pursue international scholarship programs through Erasmus Student Network. Applications for the Erasmus Program are taken once a year in February and the application dates and procedures are given in the LLP/Erasmus web page of Marmara University. Second and third year students may apply to this program. German Language and Literature Department has signed Bilateral Agreements with the following universities: University of Mannheim, Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, University of Paderborn, Humboldt-Universitaet zu Berlin and the Technical University of Dortmund.
