General Description ^
History
The department of İnformation and Records Management was founded under the name of the Archival Studies department in 1987. The department started teaching in the acdemic year of 1988-1989 and gave its first graduates in 1992. In the academic year of 1993-1994 English based teaching commenced and including the year spent learning preparatory English the length of the degree course was raised to 5 years. In June 2002 as a result of the decision of The Council of Higher Education, the name of the department changed from the department of Archival Studies to the department of Information and Records Management. In line with the change in the name of the department the curriculum was also changed and classes in Librarianship, Documentation and Information Mangement amongst others commenced in accordance with the new departmental remit. From 1994 and in conjunction with the universities's Institute of Turcology degrees at Masters level commenced and PhD degreee programmes have been running since 1997. Students can also choose Minor and Double Major degrees with the department of Turkish Language and Literature and History.

1. The set quota and curriculum requirements stated by the department have to be met following the general minimum criteria for Normal and Level transfers having been met. 2. For those students who have studied at any higher education institution the courses they might be exempt from (or require adaptation) will be determined upon application

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
For the evaluation of each course, a semester-evaluation and a final examination is held and scheduled by the instructors in the relevant dates of the academic calendar. Evaluation of the semester includes a midterm exam, homeworks, preparation of projects, laboratory practices and recitation sections. Each evaluation is based on a 100 grade system and overall semester-evaluation grade has a 40% contribution to the overall score. Final examination is based on a 100 grade system and the grade contributes 60% to the overall score. No second final exams are given. Marmara University uses Relative Grading System and a grading scale of 4.00. At the end of the semester, all grades given over 100 are transferred to Relative Grading System (BDS). Graduation Requirements
Students who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum (240 ECTS Credits) and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00/4.00 may graduate. Students who have completed the first two years of their education may get a short cycle diploma. Applications for short cycle diploma do not have any deadline. Students who have succeeded in all the required courses but have a GPA of less than 2.00 are not allowed to graduate. However, these students may be given the chance of following the third and fourth year courses that they select and approve their scores and overall GPA. Students who have only one failed course prior to graduation are given a chance to enter an exam for that course. Double major diploma or minor certificate are not given to students who have not achieved to graduate from their main major. On the other hand, diploma of the main major is given even if the double major or minor certificate requirements are not fulfilled. Minor certificate can be given to students who have not fulfilled double major requirements but fulfilled the minor requirements. Turkish and English diploma suppliments are given to graduates together with their undergraduate diploma. Key Learning Outcomes ^
1 Graduates will have basic and general knowledge about information and records management and have an understanding of the same.
2 Graduates will be able to direct all forms of collection management in libraries
3 Graduates will be able to diagnose problems in the field of information and records management and make reports on the same
4 Graduates will be acquainted with the developmental processes and basic functions of libraries, archives and other information and records management centres
5 Graduates will be able to read manuscripts and printed matter written in the Turkish Ottoman alphabet and transcribe the same.
6 Graduates will have an understanding of technical terms in English
7 Graduates will be able to carry out analyses and syntheses, using/implementing the information they have been taught
8 Graduates will have the skill to use the necessary methods, techniques and technology to implement information and record management
