General Description ^
History
The Department of Geography in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences was established in 2001 by the approval of the Directorate of Council of Higher Education and in accordance with the writing, dated 19.01.2001 and with the number 243, of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Acceptance of the students to our department was approved pursuant to the article 7/h of the law no 2547 changed by the law no 2880 and with the date 10.03.2006 by the Council of Higher Education. Accepting its first students in the academic year 2006-2007, the Department of Geography started the educational activities.
Qualification Awarded
Students who graduate from the Geography Department are titled as Geographer.
Specific Admission Requirements
Applicants for undergraduate study at Marmara University are required to take a written entrance test, First Cycle Placement Test (LYS), that is centrally organized by Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). Transfer Procedure: Students who are registered in Geography Department of another university in Turkey are able to apply to our department based on their GPA and quota of our department. International students admission is possible based on the quota of the department and the score of ‘Marmara University Entrance Examination for Students Abroad’.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
Students who have registered to our department for the first time are required to take an English Exam at the beginning of their first year that is prepared by the language school of Marmara University. Depending on their score, students may either be exempted from the mandatory preparation school or start their language education from a suitable level. Students who are registered in Geography Department of another university in Turkey are able to apply to our department based on their GPA and quota of our department. If such students are accepted, they may be exempted from some of the courses they have succeded in the previous university based on the decision of the Commission for Exemption and Administrative Board of the Faculty. Higher Educational Council do not accept apprenticeship and industrial certificates for exemption of courses.Transfer from Short Cycle education is also possible. Students gaining Short Cycle degrees should enter “Direct Transfer Test” (DGS) that is centrally organized by Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). Such students may be exempted from some of the courses they have succeded in the previous Short Cycle programs based on the decision of the Commission for Exemption and Administrative Board of the Faculty.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
Students who succeeded in all the courses of the program will graduate at the end of 4 years of education. Students with GPA less than 1.80/4.00 at the end of their second year in the department are not allowed to take the third year courses. At the beginning of the 3rd or 5th semester, geography undergraduate students with a minimum GPA of 3.00/4.00 are allowed to attend double major or minor major programs offered by the related departments depending on the quota. Applications for the Erasmus Program are taken once a year in February and the application dates and procedures are given in the LLP/Erasmus web page of Marmara University. Second and third year students may apply to this program. Applicants are required to take a language exam. Their GPA and score of the language exam are evaluated depending on the quota for the acceptance.The statutes of Marmara University Graduate Course and Examinations apply. Profile of The Programme
The Department has four major subdivisions of geography as, Physical Geography, Human and Economic Geography, Geography of Turkey and Regional Geography. The academic personnel consist of 3 professors, 2 associate professors, 3 assistant professors and 1 teaching assistant. Curriculum: The curriculum consists of three types of courses. 1.Compulsory courses: These are courses that students are obliged to take in the program which are made of four branches of geography (physical geography, human and economic geography, geography of Turkey and regional geography) and including applied geography courses in ‘COG’codes. 2.Mutual learning courses (compulsory) Courses that are regulated by the Council of Higher Education of Turkey, in the subclause (i) of the first clause of the 5th article of the Code numbered 2547, such as Ataturk's Principles and the History of Turkish Renovation, Turkish Language, and Foreign Language courses. 3.Elective courses (in COG-S codes): Courses offered in the program, which are left to students’ option . These can be interdisciplinary courses or courses which will expand the students capacities and skills and are offered in the third and fourth year of the curriculum .
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
The primary job opportunity is profession of teacher after obtaining formation of pedagogical training. Furthermore, students who graduate from Undergraduate program of Department of Geography can work as geomorphologist, climatologist, cartographer, or with other titles in governmental agencies such as General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration, General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works, General Directorate of Rural Services, Turkish Statistical Institute, Undersecretariat of State Planning Organization, and in ministries such as Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Ministry of Public Works and Settlement, General (Directorate of Highways), Ministry of Environment and Forestry (Turkish State Meteorological Service), and they can work in regional planning works.
Access to Further Studies
Graduate degrees (M.S., Ph.D) are offered by the Geography Department in its three programs through the Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences, Institute of Middle East Studies and Institute of Turkic Studies. These research areas are: Physical Geography, Human and Economic Geography, Geography of Turkey, Regional Geography, Geography of Turkıc World and Geography of Middle East.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
The statutes of Marmara University Graduate Course apply. See link. Students are required to attend classes, applied studies and examinations. Students' attendance is followed by the lecturer of the course in question. Almost every compulsory and elective classed require a written examination. Seminars and assignments may count for a written examination. Every semester has a mid term and final examination. These exams take place within the academic calendar announced by the university but the specific date and place of the examination is announced by the department. The board of the faculty may consider giving the student a compensation examination should the student have a legitimate excuse for failing to attend the examination. For classes where there is a mid term and final examination, the student's grade is assessed by adding 40% of the mid term grade and 60 % of the final grade.
Graduation Requirements
ın oreder to be graudated from undergrauate program of Geography, the students have to get 152-credit courses during 4 years (8 terms). Students who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum (240 ECTS Credits) and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00/4.00 may graduate. Students who have succeeded in all the required courses but have a GPA of less than 2.00 are not allowed to graduate. However, these students may be given the chance of following the third and fourth year courses that they select and approve their scores and overall GPA. Students who have only one failed course prior to graduation are given a chance to enter an exam for that course. Double major diploma or minor certificate are not given to students who have not achieved to graduate from their main major. On the other hand, diploma of the main major is given even if the double major or minor certificate requirements are not fulfilled. Minor certificate can be given to students who have not fulfilled double major requirements but fulfilled the minor requirements. Turkish and English diploma suppliments are given to graduates together with their undergraduate diploma.
