General Description ^
History
The Department of Translation and Interpreting( French Language)was founded in 2006 at the School of Foreign Languages in Göztepe. The department moved to the Faculty of Arts and Sciences in 2008. The first academic year began with 30 students. Educational language is French, French Preparative School is compulsory. Starting from 2012, French Translation and Interpreting Department signed double major diploma and minor certificate protocols with German Translation and Interpreting Department. The Department is an active member of LLP/Erasmus Exchange Program since 2007. Our department has bilateral agreements with many distinguished universities like INALCO, ISTI, Strasbourg University, Denis Diderot University.

Specific Admission Requirements
High school diploma. Placement through a centralised national university exam (YGS).Applicants for undergraduate study at Marmara University are required to take a written entrance test, First Cycle Placement Test (LYS), that is centrally organized by Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). They have to take a written test in English or French (LYS-5) that is also centrally organized by ÖSYM.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
Applicants for undergraduate study at Marmara University are required to take a written entrance test, First Cycle Placement Test (LYS), that is centrally organized by Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). They have to take a written test in English or French (LYS-5) that is also centrally organized by ÖSYM. Transfer Procedure: Students who are registered in French Translation and Interpreting Department of another university in Turkey are able to apply to our department based on their GPA and quota of our department. International students admission is possible based on the quota of the department and the score of ‘Marmara University Entrance Examination for Students Abroad’.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
The language in education is French. Students whose French levels are not adequate to continue an education at the undergraduate level have to join the preparatory programme in the School of Foreign Languages. The education period is 4 years. Students with GPA less than 1.80/4.00 at the end of their second year in the department are not allowed to take the third year courses. At the beginning of the 3rd or 5th semester, chemistry undergraduate students with a minimum GPA of 3.00/4.00 are allowed to attend double major or minor major programs offered by the related departments depending on the quota.
Profile of The Programme
In the Department of Translation and Interpreting (French Language), theoretical and applied courses are offered for the students of 4-year undergraduate program. In the first year, all courses are compulsory. In the third and fourth terms, the students take one elective foreign language course, and in the terms 5 to 8, a total of three elective courses. Elective Courses (5th and 6th terms): German/Spanish, Civilization, Computer-assisted Translation, Specific Topics in Translation: French Theater, Specific Topics in Translation: Literature. Elective Courses (7th and 8th terms): Internet Applications in Translation, Specific Topics in Translation: Law, Specific Topics in Translation: Medicine and Health, Professional Translation Practice (Private and Public Corporations). In our Department, Simultaneous and Consecutive Translation Courses are offered in 5th and 6th terms. Moreover, in the 8th term, the students prepare an undergraduate thesis as part of the Reporting and Presentation Course. The academic personnel consists 1 professor, 1 assistant professor, 2 instructors, 1 teaching assistant.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Our alumni can find jobs in various fields such as Conference Interpreting, Technical Translation, and Automotive Industry and in corporations such as Media Companies, Public Corporations, France-based Tourism Companies, and Translation Agencies. Moreover, students who take pedagogical formation after graduation have the chance to work as French language teachers in French-medium schools, and to pursue master’s degree in Turkish and foreign universities.
Access to Further Studies
Our alumni can pursue master’s and doctorate degrees in national and international higher education institutions. For this end, they must take the required score in ALES (Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam) conducted by ÖSYM (Student Selection and Placement Center) and must meet the requirements of the institute they apply for the master’s program.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
For the evaluation of each course, a semester-evaluation and a final examination is held and scheduled by the instructors in the relevant dates of the academic calendar. Evaluation of the semester includes a midterm exam, homeworks, preparation of projects. Each evaluation is based on a 100 grade system and overall semester-evaluation grade has a 40% contribution to the overall score. Final examination is based on a 100 grade system and the grade contributes 60% to the overall score. Marmara University uses Relative Grading System and a grading scale of 4.00. Graduation Requirements
Students who complete the ECTS credits by passing successfully all the theoretical and practical courses can get the bachelor's degree.This degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00/4.00.

Facilities
In our departement, the educational language is French. All the same, students have to study a year of foreign language education in French at Marmara University, School of Foreign Languages. There are also two laboratories for "Internet based Translation" and "Conference Interpreting". Students have the possibility to apply for an exchange program in France, Belgium and Swiss. There are three class equipped with a projection screen. Our department offers Double Major and Minor programs to the students together in cooperation with the Department of Translation and Interpreting (German Language). Our department has signed agreements with Institut National des langues et civilisations orientales (INALCO), Université Paris Diderot (Paris 7), Université de Strasbourg, Haute Ecole de Bruxelles Institut Supérieur de Traducteurs et Interprètes, Université de Haute-Alsace and Université de Rouen within the scope of Erasmus Exchange Programme. Our students have the chance to continue their education in one of these universities within the scope of this Programme. In our department, English is offered to the students as a second language and German/Spanish as a third language, thus enabling them to graduate as trilingual translators/interpreters. As part of our academic staff, foreign teachers give specialty field courses.
