General Description ^
History
The History Department at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Marmara University was founded in October 1982 in Fındıkzade quarter of Istanbul. Professor Mücteba İlgürel was appointed as the first Chair of the Department and continued this duty up until 2002 . The first academic year began in November 1982 with 50 students. The department was relocated in Göztepe Central Campus in 1991. Current Chair of the Department is Professor Gülay Öğün Bezer.
Qualification Awarded
Bachelor of Science in History. Masters and PhD degrees are also offered incorporation with Institute for Turkish Studies at the university. Graduates may teach at private and state schools. Also, they can work as specialist in the archives of various institutions as well as in the Ministry of Culture. In addition, graduates can work as academicians at private and state universities.
Specific Admission Requirements
Applicants for undergraduate study at Marmara University are required to take an exam called First Cycle Placement Test (LYS), that is centrally organized by Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). Transfer from another university to our university requires the following procedure: Students who are registered in History Department of another university in Turkey are able to apply to our department based on their GPA and quota of our department. International students admission is possible based on the quota of the department and the score of "Marmara University Entrance Examination for Students Abroad".
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
Students who are registered in History Department of another university in Turkey are able to apply to our department based on their GPA and quota of our department. If these students are accepted, they may be exempted from some of the courses they took and succeded in the previous university based on the decision of the Commission for Exemption and Administrative Board of the Faculty. Transfer from two-year Short Cycle education is also possible. Students gaining Short Cycle degrees should enter “Direct Transfer Test” (DGS) that is centrally organized by the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). Such students may be exempted from some of the courses they took and succeded in the Short Cycle programs based on the decision of the Commission for Exemption and Administrative Board of the Faculty.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
Students who succeeded in all courses of each program earn a graduation at the end of 4 years of education. Students with GPA less than 1.80/4.00 at the end of the second year in their department are not allowed to take the third year courses. At the beginning of the 3rd or 5th semester, history undergraduate students with a minimum GPA of 3.00/4.00 are allowed to attend double major or minor major programs offered by the related departments depending on the quota. Applications for Erasmus Program are received once a year in February and application dates and procedures are given in the LLP/Erasmus web page of Marmara University. Second and third year students may apply to this program. Applicants are required to take a language exam. Their GPA and score of the language exam are evaluated depending on the quota for the acceptance.
Profile of The Programme
The Department is one of the leading history and research establishments in Turkey that offers teaching, and academic research methods in the field of history. The faculty members are comprised of internationally respected research scientists, and the department is successful in attracting major research grants. The students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to pursue international scholarship programs through Erasmus Student Network. The academic personnel consists of 13 professors, 8 associate professors, 9 assistant professors, 1 instructors, 9 teaching assistants. The Department has 7 major subdivisions of History as, ‘Ancient History’, ‘General Turkish History’, ‘Medieval Age’ ‘Early Modern History’, ‘Modern History’, the History of Turkish Republic’ and ‘the History of Caucasia’.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Our recent graduates have found positions in official or private institutions and in positions as teaching and research assistants in distinguished universities of Turkey. The graduates who have also completed the pedagogical courses have found jobs in the field of education as history teachers.
Access to Further Studies
Graduate degrees (Masters, Ph.D) are offered by the History Department in its six programs through the Institute for Turkish Studies. These include: ‘Ancient History’, ‘General Turkish History’, ‘Medieval Age’ ‘Early Modern History’, ‘Modern History’, the History of Turkish Republic’. Many graduates with Masters’ and Ph. D degrees have found working environment in the private and public educational institutions and are preferred by the distinguished universities.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
For the evaluation of each course, a midterm and a final examination is held and scheduled by each departments in the relevant dates of the academic calendar. Evaluation of the semester includes a midterm and a final exam (instructors may require homework/s and presentation/s). Evaluation of a course is based on a 100 grade system: overall midterm grade has a 40% contribution to the overall score. Final examination is based on a 100 grade system and the grade contributes 60% to the overall score. No makeup examination is given. Marmara University uses Relative Grading System and a grading scale of 4.00. At the end of each semester, all grades given over 100 are transferred to Relative Grading System (BDS). Graduation Requirements
Students who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum (240 ECTS Credits) and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00/4.00 gain graduation. Students who have completed the first two years of their education may get a short cycle diploma. Applications for short cycle diploma do not have any deadline. Students who have succeeded in all the required courses but have a GPA of less than 2.00 are not allowed to graduate. However, these students may be given the chance of following the third and fourth year courses that they select and approve their scores and overall GPA. Students who passed all courses except a course are given a second chance of exam. Double major diploma or minor certificate are not given to students who have not achieved in their main major. On the other hand, diploma of the main major is given even if the double major or minor certificate requirements are not fulfilled. Minor certificate can be given to students who have not fulfilled double major requirements but fulfilled the minor requirements. Turkish and English diploma suppliments are given to graduates together with their undergraduate diploma.
