General Description ^
History
Turkish Language and Literature Department is one of the three departments which have located in the Faculty of Art and Science that started education at 8 November 1982. The first Dean of Faculty as established Dean Prof. Dr. Hakkı Dursun YILDIZ invited two guests and department started education with 50 students. Now, Department continues its activities on the first floor of Faculty of Arts and Sciences building Block A, since its moving from temporary building in Fındıkzade to Goztepe Campus under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Mehmet AKALIN in 1989-1990. The first graduates of the Department of Turkish Language and Literature had 100% success rate in the teacher competency exams previously made by the Ministry of Education. This success continued later and had access to employment for the students in many areas easily particularly in the press education and training sector.

Specific Admission Requirements
Applicants for undergraduate study at Marmara University are required to take a written entrance test, First Cycle Placement Test (LYS) that is centrally organized by Student Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM). Transfer Procedure: Students who are registered in Turkish Language and Literature Department of another university in Turkey are able to apply to our department based on their GPA and quota of our department. International students’ admission is possible based on the quota of the department and the score of ‘Marmara University Entrance Examination for Students Abroad’.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
Students who have registered to our department for the first time are required to take an English Exam at the beginning of their first year that is prepared by the Language School of Marmara University. Depending on their score, students may be exempted from English lessons which are given in first year or they might attend to English lessons. Students who are registered in Turkish Language and Literature Department of another university in Turkey are able to apply to our department based on their GPA and quota of our department. If such students are accepted, they may be exempted from some of the courses they have succeeded in the previous university based on the decision of the Commission for Exemption and Administrative.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
Students who succeeded in all the courses of the program will graduate at the end of 4 years of education. There is no thesis requirement for graduation. Students with GPA less than 1.80/4.00 at the end of their second year in the department are not allowed to take the third year courses. At the beginning of the 3rd or 5th semester, Turkish Language and Literature students who have a minimum GPA of 3.00/4.00 are allowed to attend double major or minor major programs offered by the related departments depending on the quota.
Profile of The Programme
The department of Turkish Language and Literature offers a 4 years training programme. The first three years compulsary courses are offered and the last year elective courses are offered in the programme. The purpose of Department is to teach historical periods, new ages and present times of Turkish language and literature also to train students who know language and literature well, avoid having random speaking and quick writing bring, follows all developments, publications and panels related to the field. One of the purposes is also to make Marmara University Department of Turkish Language and Literature an international Turcology center by student exchanges to increase communication with researchers of this field around the world. The purpose of our department is educating students on the texts of Turkish language and literature teaching them indispensability of literature at the academic level.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Our graduates can be a teacher at the Middle and High schools which are connected to the Ministry of National Education colleges and special courses. Apart from that, they can continue to academic life as a member of the faculty or work as a lecturer of Turkish Language at several universities. They can easily find positions as teaching and research assistants in distinguished universities of Turkey, the USA and Europe. They can also work in archives, the Ministry of Culture, TRT, the media, publishers, and various ministries such as Ministry of Culture, educational and cultural institutions abroad.
Access to Further Studies
The students may access to national further studies in the Institute of Turkish Studies . Applicants are required to have a score of 60/100 from the ALES exam that is centrally organized by Student Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM) or an equivalent exam approved by Inter-University Council of Higher Education Council of Turkey (YÖK). Our graduates can access to further studies in four areas: Classical Turkish Literature, Modern Turkish Literature, Old Turkish and Modern Turkish. Every area has high license and doctorate programs. Applicants from other majors must attend to the preparation period of scientific first year.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
For the evaluation of each course, a semester-evaluation and a final examination is held and scheduled by the instructors in the relevant dates of the academic calendar. Evaluation of the semester includes a midterm exam, homeworks, each evaluation is based on a 100 grade system and overall semester-evaluation grade has a 40% contribution to the overall score. Final examination is based on a 100 grade system and the grade contributes 60% to the overall score. No second final exams are given. Marmara University uses Relative Grading System and a grading scale of 4.00. If a student fails in a lesson he/she can attend summer course to pass. At least 20 students should demand the lesson to open in summer courses. Students can attend another university’s courses if student’s failed lesson’s lecturer accepts.
Graduation Requirements
Students who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum (240 ECTS Credits) and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 1.80 /4.00 may graduate. Students who have completed the first two years of their education may get a short cycle diploma. Applications for short cycle diploma do not have any deadline. Students who have succeeded in all the required courses but have a GPA of less than 1.80 are not allowed to graduate.

Facilities
Students of the department can benefit in the section 4 classrooms, 1 seminar room and 1 reading room of the faculty. All lessons are in the department are given in Turkish. Some of students, providing that they fulfill the requirements, may go to study one or two semesters at concerned universities within the scope of bilateral Erasmus agreements which our university signed with 230 different universities of Europe. Our students engaged in educational movement can benefit educational, cultural and social facilities just like other students of universities which they went. Likewise, foreigner students are accepted to our department to study one or two semesters from concerned universities within the scope of bilateral Erasmus agreements.
