History
Department of Traditional Turkish Arts which is the one of the most important public body among all Turkish universities. Department has been founded in 1983 at Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts as “Department of Traditional Turkish Handicrafts”. At the begining it was including four branches: İllumination- Miniature Branch, Binding Branch, Ancient Turkish Tiles Branch and Carpet-Rug -Ancient Fabric Designs Branch. This department began to provide education in two main art branches: İllumination- Miniature Branch and Carpet-Rug-Ancient Fabric Designs Branch. The first graduation was in 1986-87. It is one of youngest department of the Faculty which has been ceaselessly continuing its activity. The name of the establishment of this department was changed by the senate of the university as “Department of Traditional Turkish Arts ” in 2009. There are undergraduate education program in the faculty, Master and Doctorate of Art program in the institute of our University.
Qualification Awarded
Students who complete the programme are awarded a Bachelor's degree in Traditional Turkish Arts Department .
Specific Admission Requirements
Applicants must have a high school diploma (or equivalent) and achieve the necessary mark in the entrance examinations.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
Incoming students are eligible to take an examination diagnosing their ability in a foreign language; the students that pass the exam are exempt from the first year foreign language courses. In addition, students transferring from another department or university may request that certain courses they have already successfully passed be considered equivalent to courses for another programme. In this case, the board of directors have the right to grant exemption from certain courses if appropriate.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
Students must fulfil all requirements of the programme, consisting of a total of 240 ECTS, according to the Marmara University Education and Examination regulations (August 24, 2008 / 26977) and have achieved a CGPA of 2.00 or higher.
Profile of The Programme
Traditional Turkish Arts Department includes two main branches which are Carpet-Kilim-Old Fabric Patterns and Illumination-Miniature. It’s program includes two Undergraduate, Graduate and Proficiency.For the license program, students received special skills tests, the first year of basic art department as a student take courses in General Education and Culture. Secondary education students at the beginning of the year in line with the quota status and success are divided into Carpet-Kilim-Old Fabric Patterns or Illumination-Miniature branches. Traditional Turkish Arts Department purpose that vision and ability perception gained by internalizing the values of traditional and by art formation, contemporary and original approaches in the areas of artistic structure aims to bring the education of the creative elements.Educational process, scientific research within the scope of traditional Turkish handicrafts, is not living and growing determination of the art products, archiving, and systematic evaluation of the accumulation of Turkish culture to build.Carpet-Kilim-Old Fabric Patterns program of the Department; Kirkitli Fabrics, Printing and Weaving Arts disciplines (including Textile Handicrafts) is taken part in the theoretical and practical courses.With Computer Design courses support to provide in a separate dimension to art work in the field. In addition, the Textile Restoration and Conservation in relation to the basic information will be transferred.Education is compulsory to complete the process of professional internships, living textiles training programs with the world. Carpet-Kilim-Old Fabric Patterns of the Department, Bachelor, Master and Proficiency programs are integrated. Programs have graduated the relevant fields of art, can work on the Restoration-Conservation and Appraisal.The purpose of education in Department of Miniature and Illumination, utilizing contemporary and traditional arts such aesthetic features and principles of the development of new values and provides a win. Graduates works as the artist in the relevant field. They work with scientific methods and the maintenance, repair and take office museums or libraries. Traditional Arts Department connects with our domestic and overseas experts and concerned about the continuous education of the most important supporter of our program.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Graduates of this program can work art in their fields and have an opportunity in the public or private sector. Artists can perform their arts at studio system or work as a consultant on Expert. If they graduated Pedagogical Formation courses and pass the KPSS exam, they can work as a teacher at MEB (Ministry of Education).
Access to Further Studies
Students who have successfully completed the undergraduate programme and passed the Master's degree entrance examination and the KPDS/ÜDS examination may enter a Master's degree programme or Proficiency in Arts programme.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Each term, every course has one midterm and one final exam. The final grade is calculated by adding 60% of midterm and 40% of final exam. The means of assessment and examination as well as the grading criteria for each course are stated in the course descriptions of the programme.
Graduation Requirements
In order to graduate from this undegraduate program, the students are required; to succeed in all of the courses listed in the curriculum of the program by getting the grade of at least DD with a minimum of 240 ECTS, to have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00 out of 4.00, to complete their compulsory internship in a specified duration and quality.

Facilities
There are engraving, wooden carving, calligraphy, illumination, weaving, printing, carpet and rug atelier, natural dye, computer design lab and classrooms at the department. Department area includes Head of Department, Sections of the Department and department members in the area of rooms and classrooms.
