General Description ^
History
Since it was set up in 1984, the Department of Political Science and International Relations has continually developed, becoming one of the major departments in Turkey offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in Political Science and International Relations disciplines. The department operates under the Faculty of Political Sciences, whose origins date back to 1883 when the “Hamidiye School of Higher Commercial Education” was founded by the Ottoman Ministry of Trade.

According to Turkish regulations and rules in higher education, only formal prior learning is recognized.
Profile of The Programme
In addition to the essential courses on Turkish Politics and International Relations, we offer courses on Eurasian Studies, European Studies, Balkans, Middle East, Caucasus and Central Asia. Apart from those, numerous interdisciplinary elective courses ranging from economics to political ecology, from gender studies to politics and cinema are offered by the staff members and adjunct faculty. The Department is also unique in terms of the variety of foreign languages it teaches. Students can elect not only major European languages, but also Ottoman Turkish, Russian and Arabic courses.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
A high percentage of the graduates find employment in the private banking, finance, sales and marketing sector, where the University enjoys a well-earned reputation. That standing is also reflected by the fact that its students are recruited on a regular basis each year by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other state ministries and institutions. Still other students pursue their post-graduate studies in various academic institutions in Turkey and abroad.
Access to Further Studies
Students who have completed the program may apply to second cycle programs or third cycle programs.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
The passing achievement grade of each course should be minimum 50/100. Final and make-up examination grades should be minimum 50/100. In the calculation of final achievement grade of the course, the weight ratios of the grades obtained from the mid-term(s) and final or make-up examinations are taken as 40% and %60, respectively. The student has to attend 70% of the courses. Otherwise, s/he repeats the course in the following year. The student’s standing is calculated in the form of a GPA and a CGPA and announced at the end of each semester by the Registrar’s Office.
Graduation Requirements
This degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 50/100.

Facilities
Along with the departments of Economics and Business Administration, the Department of Political Science and International Relations has student exchange agreements with Beloit College in the United States. Apart from it, the students have the opportunity to pursue graduate studies in Sweden thanks to the close academic relations formed with the Swedish Institute. The department is also a part of the LLP/Erasmus exchange program. At present, it has exchange agreements with 27 European universities at various levels and this number increases constantly with new ones. Part of the academic staff is also active in the Center for International Relations (MURCIR), which organizes seminars, conferences and other activities that enhance the basic curriculum.
