General Description ^
History
Fast unplanned and expansive development activities in Turkey have led to serious environmental problems. The realization of the need for sustainable development and minimization of the environmental damage have initiated a demand of qualified environmental engineers who can work in the industry, in the government and in the regulating authorities. Today, there is a great demand on water supply, wastewater collection and disposal in Turkey as well as on water, wastewater, and industrial wastewater treatment and solid waste management. These demands have increased as the population of Turkey increased and as the inhabitants of the big cities multiplied at a very high rate due to migrations from the rural areas. The Environmental Engineering Department of Marmara University has been established in 1990 and accepted first batch of undergraduate students in the same year. After a four years education, the first enrolled students graduated in 1994. The program aims to educate engineers who can bring engineering solutions to complex environmental problems. It emphasizes biological, chemical, and physical phenomena and engineering principles, laboratory and computational skills, computer applications to the analysis and solution of the environmental problems. The students are encouraged to work individually and in teams, and are expected to develop a broad awareness of the environmental problems and their solutions. They are expected to analyze, evaluate and bring solutions to real case problems selected from different cities and industries. Written, oral presentation and computer skills of the students have a high priority in the education curriculum of the department and these skills are improved in the lectures.

Specific Admission Requirements
To have high school diploma. To have enough points in the University Student Selection Exam numeric. English language proficiency of internationally recognized exams enough points to start their first year of direct fields
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
There is no standardization of recognition of prior learning in YOK. Students coming from colleges (2 years of duration) should attend by their transcripts. After the comission decision, some of the lessons they have taken before may be accepted and they should not take these lessons again.They have to take the courses that were not accepted by the comission.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
The language of instruction is English in our department. The students lack in this regard go to preparatory programme in the School of Foreign Languages for one year. The education period is 8 semesters. Students who complete the 240 ECTS credits successfully can get the bachelor's degree.

Access to Further Studies
Students graduated from the programme can apply to the graduate programmes (master and doctorate ). They may be accepted depending on the test score in ALES (The Academic Personnel and Post Graduate Education Admittance Examination) and ÜDS (The Foreign Language Test of the Inter Universities Council).
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
In Environmental Engineering Department students are evaluated by two midterms and one final exam in almost every course. The weight of final exam is 40%. Total weight of midterms, projects, quizzes, homeworks in the semester is 60%. The students are obliged to have an attendance of 70%.
Graduation Requirements
Students should complete 240 ECTS credits and have a grade points average 2.00 over 4.00 at least. 60 work days summer internships is obliged.

Facilities
There are 5 professors, 2 associated professors, 7 assistant professors and 8 teaching and research assistants found in the department. There are several ongoing research projects about water, wastewater, solid waste, hazardous waste and air pollution. Laboratory Facilities and Services Environmental Engineering laboratory serves on the analysis of water, wastewater and sludge. The laboratory is used for teaching and research projects for the benefit of industry and governmental establishments. Key Learning Outcomes ^
1 The students will be familiar with mathematics, science and environmental engineering and have sufficient information on the theoretical and applied knowledge in these areas. The student will be able to apply models to solve theoretical and applied engineering problems.
2 Students will be able to identify, formulate and solve complex problems. For this purpose, the student will be able to select and apply appropriate methods, analyses and modelling skills.
3 Students are able to design complex systems, processes, devices or products under realistic constraints and conditions, in order to meet certain requirements. For this purpose, students will be able to apply modern design methods.
4 Students will be able to select and use modern techniques and tools as required for the development of environmental engineering applications, and they will be able to use information technology and at least one computer software program effectively.
5 The student will be able to design experimental setups used to investigate the environmental engineering problems, as well as being able to conduct experiments, collect data, analyse and interpret the results.
6 The student will be able to work effectively with disciplinary and multi-disciplinary teams, and will have self-study skills.
7 Students will be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing , and has knowledge of at least one foreign language (at European Language Portfolio Level B2+).
8 Students will be able to recognize the need for lifelong learning, information access, monitoring and continuous self-renewal ability in science and technology developments.
9 Students have professional and ethical responsibilities.
