General Description ^
History
The “Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department” was established in 1997 comprising the Manufacturing Metallurgy Main Scientific Discipline and Materials Science Main Scientific Discipline following the Computer Science, Enviromental, Industrial, Electrical-Electronical, Chemical and Mechanical Engineering Departments ,respectively, after the foundation of the Faculty of Engineering in 1991. Our department started offering courses in 2000-2001 academic year. Starting with 2003–2004 Academic Year, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Master’s courses and Ph.D. Courses starting from 2009-2010 academic year were offered in the Institute for Graduate Studies in Pure and Applied Scieces.
Qualification Awarded
In the programme of the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering , our students have the opportunuity to choose the elective courses such as social, judicial, executive and financial domains , which could orientate them according to their individual abilities beside their basic science, engineering sciences, engineering design and compulsory courses. The language in education is English. The stuents who completed the programme successfully are awarded with “Bachelor Degree in the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering”.
Specific Admission Requirements
Applicants for undergraduate study at this department are required to take a written entrance test, Student Selection and Placement Test (ÖSYS), that is centrally organized by Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) in Turkey but also in Cyprus and then they have to get enough points at the scientific section of the tests, so they are placed into the departments they want respecting to the quotas of every department. Our department accepts the students who fulfill the requirements for acceptance conditions to undergraduate programmes of the Council of Higher Education and our University respecting to the quotas. The language in education is English. Students whose English levels are not adequate to continue an education at the undergraduate level have to join the preparatory programme in the School of Foreign Languages. The education period is 4 years.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
Before the formal institutions of the Turkish Higher Education (formal) recognition of learning in the vertical, horizontal, and the university is in the transitions, the Higher Education Authority has identified "HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS AND ASSOCIATE DEGREE PROGRAMS BETWEEN THE TRANSITION LEVEL, DOUBLE MAJOR, MINOR AND TRANSFER OF CREDIT INSTITUTIONS ON BASIS OF INTER-REGULATION" carried out within the scope. Outside formal education institutions in Turkey, based on experience in formal or non-certificate-based (in-formal and non-formal) learning the process of recognition at an early stage yet. Therefore, all programs of the University of Marmara in full recognition of prior learning started. But the plans, programs, training courses in the pool for some Exemption exams are held at the beginning of each academic semester. Competencies expected of students in these courses have provided thinks has the right to take the exam. The exam and pass the relevant course in the curriculum from which students are exempt.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Students whose English levels are not adequate to continue an education at the undergraduate level have to join the preparatory programme in the School of Foreign Languages. The education period is 4 years. Students who complete the 240 ECTS credits by passing successfully all the courses and doing their apprenticeship in the Department Education Plan can get the bachelor’s degree.
Profile of The Programme
The Department of The Metalurgical and Materials Engineering is a branch of engineering about the conversion of the material to the final product needed by the society, passing th stages of design, development and manufacturing meanwhile using the theoritical and pratical knowledge. Since the beginning of the civiliztion, diverse materials have been used with the energy to upgrade the life Standard of the human beings. In the most of the engineering branches, new designs depends on the development of new materials. In this programme, our students are very well-equipped with essential knowledge and skills to develop the advanced technology materials. The courses offered to the students cover the the theoritical and pratical knowledge about the relation between the process-the microstructure-the characteristic-the performance and about he behaviour of the material during the application. Beside this, we work to provide the resources essential to educate the expert individuals who are researchers at the courses and thesis work, aiming to life-time learning, being able to prepare and manage a project, to observe the surroundings and the developments, and prone to the multidisciplinary and group work. In the programme of the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering , our students have the opportunuity to choose the elective courses such as social, judicial, executive and financial domains , which could orientate them according to their individual abilities beside their basic science, engineering sciences, engineering design and compulsory courses. Our academically successfull students can use “the Lateral Major Programme” who allows the specialization about the other matters at the other departments in our Faculty, or “the Double Major Programme” who gives the opportunity to get a second Bachelor Degree of a second major. As it is known, during the history, the one of the important fronts of the information and technology competition between the countries is the production, development and utilization of high featured materials. That’s why, we aim to equip our students with essential knowledge and skills to develop the advanced technology materials. Therefore we allow them to use the computers and high technology equipments effectively in the courses and the laboratories. Beside this, we work to provide the resources essential to educate the expert individuals who are researchers at the courses and thesis work, aiming to life-time learning, being able to prepare and manage a project, to observe the surroundings and the developments, to contribute to the science by extending the borders of knowledge and to lead the multidisciplinary project teams and prone to group work. Our aim in making this, is to help them to become highly qualified individuals who are bringing positive values not only to theirselves but also to the community where they live and who don’t intend to get passively what is given but who can use in a good way by interpreting.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Our alumni find easily jobs inland and abroad owing to the qualified education they acquired in our Department. They are still working in areas such as processing, manufacturing, quality control, research and development and marketing in companies such as “Turkish Airlines”, “Assan Aluminum”, “Renault”, “Kroman Steel”, “Eregli Iron and Steel Factories” and institutions such as “TUBİTAK MAM” ( The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey Marmara Research Center ) and also living and working in countries such as France, Finland and Canada while continuing their graduate educations.
Access to Further Studies
Our students who are graduated after fulfulling the requirements can apply to the graduate programmes (master and doctorate ) with or without thesis in their scientific area or else and by meeting conditions of these programmes, they may be accepted also depending on the test score for the post graduate education such as “ALES” (The Academic Personnel and Post Graduate Education Admittance Examination), ÜDS ( The Foreign Language Test of the Inter Universities Council ), KPDS ( Foreign Language Level Examination for Civil Cervants ) which are centrally organized by Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM).
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
In our Department, the highest educational standards are applied. Students are examined by mostly two midterm exams and one final exam in almost every course. In addition to these main elements, projects, quizes, homework results and laboratory skills are considered while evaluating students’ success. The course grade of students are calculated by relative valuation (curve) system in almost every course. In this determination, the average of the class and the expectation of the professor have equivalent effect.
Graduation Requirements
In order to graduate from the Undergraduate Program of The Metallurgical and Materials Engineering it is obliged to complete 142 credits successfully. In our faculty, evaluation is performed according to letter grading system. Students who have grade points average lower than 2.00 over 4.00 cannot graduate. 60 work days summer internships consisting of 30 work days laboratory, 30 work days management are obliged. Writing a thesis, in the scope of MSE497 Thesis I and MSE498 Thesis II lectures in last year of the four year curriculum is obliged.

Facilities
The “Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department” was established and started to the education and research activities in 1997 with academic staff few in number but high in quality. In th following years, the department developped very fast and added the young researchers coming from abroad to its staff, so reached to an international quality. During the last years, the department made intelligent and efficient work to found the research and education laboratories. As a result of this, the department academic staff continues its studies successfully getting qualified national and international projects. Our academic staff continues its studies not only the classical materials engineering subjects but also important actual topics of materials. Because of this reason, the laboratories for developping the advaced technological materials were formed in our department. The configuration of Materials Laboratories is composing of 3 main parts; Materials synthesis and processing, materials characterization, and Mechanical testing sections. These laboratories are equipped with modern systems and devices. The composition, inner structure ve characteristics of the materials and products obtained in these laboratories are determined by the modern analysis equipments and systems installed in the qualification and mechanical properties laboratories. Materials Processing Laboratories; There are essential units for the physical procedures and chemical processes during manufacturing of advanced ceramics, metals, polymers products and shaping and processing devices after the material production -Crushing, -Grinding, -Sizing, -Blending and -Mixing raw materials. Forming the materials into useful solid product shapes are accomplished by , - Shaping presses ;-Uniaxial Press, -Isostatic Press, Furnaces; -Drying, -Heat treatment, - Sintering. Special processing and synthesis equipment; -Spray dryer, Crystal Growth, Solidification and casting; -Induction Furnace, - Casting Sand Testing Laboratory. Materials Characterization Laboratories; Determination of many aspects of the micro, meso, and macrostructure of materials, Chemical, physical, thermal, and mechanical, Materials characterization laboratories are equipped with state of the art devices and systems. These laboratories are euipped with devices that can characterize the microstucture, the physical and chemical properties, analyze the phases, classify the materials according to the application areas and atomical compositions.- X-Ray Diffractometer, - X-Ray Spectrometer, SEM, Thermal Analysis Systems (TGA, DTA, DSG, Dilatometer), -Rheometer, - FT-IR, Particle Size Analyzer,- Chemical Analysis (ICP-MS, GC). -Metallographic examination Sample Preparation; -Grounding,- polishing and -etching,- Metal Microscope, -Stereo microscope, -Quantitative Phase Analysis, -Corrosion Test Units. -Mechanical Testing Laboratories; Determination of strengths and ductilities of materials at different working conditions, Mechanical testing laboratories are equipped with state of the art devices and systems. Tensile, Fatigue, Wear, Impact, Creep. Hardness; Micro Hardness, Vickers, Brinell, Rockwell.
Key Learning Outcomes ^
1 Students will possess knowledge about mathematics, science and metallurgical and materials engineering and have sufficient information about theoretical and applied knowledge in these areas. They will be able to apply models to solve theoretical and applied engineering problems.
2 Students will be able to identify, formulate and solve complex problems. For this purpose, the student will be able to select and apply appropriate methods, analyses and modelling skills.
3 Students will be able to design complex systems, processes or products under realistic constraints and conditions, and meet certain requirements. To this end they will be able to apply modern design methods.
4 Students will be able to select and use the modern techniques and tools that are required for the development of metallurgical and materials engineering applications; they will be able to use information technology and at least one computer software program effectively.
5 Students will be able to design experimental setups to investigate metallurgical and materials engineering problems, conduct experiments, collect data, analyze and interpret results.
6 The student will be able to work effectively with disciplinary and multi-disciplinary teams, and will have self-study skills.
7 Students will be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing , and has knowledge of at least one foreign language (at European Language Portfolio Level B2+).
8 Students will be able to recognize the need for lifelong learning, information access, monitoring and continuous self-renewal ability in science and technology developments.
9 Students have professional and ethical responsibilities.
10 Students will have knowledge about project management, risk management and change management. The student will be able to recognize entrepreneurship, innovation and sustainable development in business life.
11 Students will have knowledge about metallurgical and materials engineering applications on the universal and social dimensions of health and the environment, as well as the impact of the same on safety; in addition, the student will be aware of contemporary issues, engineering solutions, and an awareness of legal consequences.
