General Description ^
History
Marmara University Engineering Faculty (MUEF) was established at 27 June 1987. MUEF started instruction in the education year of 1990-1991. There were computer engineering, environmental engineering and industrial engineering branches. Then, in 1997 mechanical engineering department, in 2000 material and metallurgical engineering department, in 2002 chemical engineering department started instruction. After starting Bachelor Education, Chemical Engineering Master's courses and Ph.D. Courses were began in the Institute for Graduate Studies in Pure and Applied Scieces.
Qualification Awarded
Students who are academically successful get “Undergraduate Degree in Chemical Engineering”.
Specific Admission Requirements
All students who get enough points at the test, centrally organized by Student Selection and Placement Center (OSYM), can register to our departments within quotas. Our department accepts the students who fulfill the requirements for acceptance conditions to undergraduate programmes of the Council of Higher Education and our University respecting to the quotas. The language in education of Marmara University Chemical Engineering Department, that started education in 2002-2003 academic year, is minimum 30% English (in practice 50%). Students placed in our Department are taken to the Proficiency exam in English that is organized by the Department of Foreign Languages, Marmara University. Students whose English levels are not adequate to continue an education at the undergraduate level begin to undergraduate education with the condition of passing the proficiency exam after joining the English Preparatory Programme.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
Before the formal institutions of the Turkish Higher Education (formal) recognition of learning in the vertical, horizontal, and the university is in the transitions, the Higher Education Authority has identified "HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS AND ASSOCIATE DEGREE PROGRAMS BETWEEN THE TRANSITION LEVEL, DOUBLE MAJOR, MINOR AND TRANSFER OF CREDIT INSTITUTIONS ON BASIS OF INTER-REGULATION" carried out within the scope. Outside formal education institutions in Turkey, based on experience in formal or non-certificate-based (in-formal and non-formal) learning the process of recognition at an early stage yet. Therefore, all programs of the University of Marmara in full recognition of prior learning started. But the plans, programs, training courses in the pool for some Exemption exams are held at the beginning of each academic semester. Qualification Requirements and Regulations
In Marmara University Chemical Engineering Department, the language of instruction is minimum 30% (in practice 50%) in English. Students whose English levels are not adequate to continue an education at the undergraduate level have to join the preparatory programme in the School of Foreign Languages. The duration of education in our department is 4 years. Students who successfully complete all courses and internships required in the curriculum of the department can get the bachelor’s degree.
Profile of The Programme
Chemical engineering is a wide and versatile branch of engineering dealing with developing and applying of processes where chemical compositions, energy contents or physical conditions of materials change. Marmara University Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Programme is arranged to response the latest developments in chemical engineering field either in our country or in the world, and also it is qualified in preparing the students to sustainable technologies of the future. In the laboratories equipped with the latest technology, fuel-heat, unit operations, reaction engineering applications are performed. In Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Programme, it is aimed to gain an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering; an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data; an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability; an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams; an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems; an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility; an ability to communicate effectively; the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context; a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning; a knowledge of contemporary issues; an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice; an ability to develop conscious and sensibility for social and human sciences, and arts; an ability to apply basic chemical science principles; an ability to understand and apply energy, momentum, and mass transfer and equilibrium equations; an ability to analyze, design, and control physical and chemical processes. As a result of bilateral agreements with the universities abroad, our students have the opportunity to have a period of their education in a foreign university. They can also have a double major or minor program in various departments especially in the departments of industrial, mechanical, and computational engineering.

Access to Further Studies
Graduate students who fulfilled the required conditions of Chemical Engineering programme can be accepted in the programme of M. Sc. whether with thesis or not and Ph. D. programmes as long as they provide proficiency conditions of the institution they applied whether in their field or not according to their results in post graduate education examinations (ALES, UDS, KPDS).
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Students are evaluated over two midterms and one final exam in almost all lectures. In addition to these main factors, project, homework results and laboratory achievements are commonly considered in evaluations.
Graduation Requirements
In order to graduate from the programme it is obliged to complete 140 credits successfully. In our faculty, evaluation is performed according to letter grading system. Students who have grade points average lower than 2.00 over 4.00 cannot graduate. 60 work days summer internships consisting of 30 work days laboratory, 30 work days management are obliged. Writing a thesis, in the scope of KMM497 Thesis I and KMM498 Thesis II lectures in last year of the four year curriculum is obliged.

Facilities
In Marmara University Chemical Engineering Department, researches in the fields of Unit Operations; Energy/Fuel (Renawable or not); Environment, Ecology and Life Cycle Analysis; Polymer Technology; Inorganic Technologies; Biochemical Technologies; Mathematical Modelling and Optimization are carried on. In this concept, our department has Unit Operations Laboratory, Heat and Fuel Laboratory, Polymer Laboratory, Inorganic Technologies Laboratory, Instrumental Analysis Laboratory and Control Laboratory. Besides, Marmara University Chemical Engineering Department carries out not only consultancy services but also analysis operations in various industry branches.
Key Learning Outcomes ^
1 Students will have knowledge in mathematics, science and chemical engineering and will have sufficient information about theoretical and applied knowledge in these areas. They will be able to apply models to solve theoretical and applied engineering problems.
2 Students will be able to identify, formulate and solve complex problems. For this purpose, the student will be able to select and apply appropriate methods, analyses and modelling skills.
3 Students are able to design complex systems, processes, devices or products under realistic constraints and conditions, in order to meet certain requirements. For this purpose, students will be able to apply modern design methods.
4 The student will be able to select and use modern techniques and tools as required for the development of chemical engineering applications; the student will be able to use information technology and at least one computer software program effectively.
5 The student will be able to design experimental setups to investigate chemical engineering problems, conduct experiments, collect data, analyse and interpret results.
6 The student will be able to work effectively with disciplinary and multi-disciplinary teams, and will have self-study skills.
7 Students will be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing , and has knowledge of at least one foreign language (at European Language Portfolio Level B2+).
8 Students will be able to recognize the need for lifelong learning, information access, monitoring and continuous self-renewal ability in science and technology developments.
9 Students have professional and ethical responsibilities.
10 Students will have knowledge about project management, risk management and change management. The student will be able to recognize entrepreneurship, innovation and sustainable development in business life.
