History
Department of Bioengineering continues to offer courses actively in Marmara University, Faculty of Engineering . Department of Bioengineering started to offer courses in 2010-2011 academic year after registering of the students who are successful in the exam of OSYM according to the rules and capacities stated by OSYM.

Specific Admission Requirements
The students who are successful in the exam of OSYM and have required exam results can enter bioengineering department according to the rules and capacities stated by OSYM. Marmara University Faculty of Engineering Rules are also applied.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
The recognition of former formal learning (education), the acceptance of special students, the horizontal transitions and the transitions within the university takes place according to “The Legislation of The Graduate (Master) Education and Learning in Higher Education Institutions” determined by The Council of Higher Education
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
The education is in English. Students should pass English Qualification Exam otherwise they should attend Engilish classes for a year. Students should complete 144 credits. The education period is 4 years.
Profile of The Programme
Bioengineering is the application of concepts and methods of life sciences such as biology, microbiology, molecular biology combined with engineering principles to living systems. In the 21st century through the recent developments bioengineering is accepted as a key tool for the socio-economic development of humanity. Bioengineering is solving the problems of community and concerned sectors by being a science-based discipline founded upon engineering such as fluid mechanics,mass and heat transfer, thermodynamics, reactor design, kinetics, with the life sciences such as biology, microbiology,gene technologies, protein chemistry, metabolism. Since the improvement increases quickly in bioengineering, biotechnological technics are used in various industrial areas like pharmaceutical, chemistry, environment and food industry, new methods are developed and these methods are used for production and application. Generally, bioengineers use the principles of biotechnology to obtain biologically compatible materials such as different food products, energy sources (hydrogen, bioethanol, biogas), medicines (antibiotics, vitamins, hormones) and biochemical substances ( protein and amino acids, enzymes, organic acids, pesticides, polymers). Bioenginnering has a close history with biotechnology and there is a rapid development in this area. Bioengineering is considered as one of the primary science discipline by European Union 6th and 7th Framework Programs and TR Prime Ministry State Planning Organization 9th Development Programme (2007-2013).
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Bioengineers work in the manufacture and application areas of biologic and biologically compatible products , design of bioprocesses, and production,management, administiration, and technical marketing in research departments of biotechnology sectors.
Access to Further Studies
The students who graduate from the program by completing the necessary conditions for education can be accepted for doctoral education by institutes if they provide the qualification requirements according to their results in postgraduate exams (ALES, ÜDS, KPDS).
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
In Department of Bioengineering, examination regulations, assesment and grading are performed according to rules and intructions of the Marmara University Faculty of Engineering Education and Examination Instructions.
Graduation Requirements
Students should complete 144 credits, 163 hours and 48 courses in order to graduate from the programme. 2 summer internships for 6 weeks are required. BIOE 497 ENGINEERING PROJECT I and BIOE 498 ENGINEERING PROJECT II which are included in last year schedule are required and there is an obligatory to write a thesis. In engineering faculty evaluation is performed by letter grading and a student who has a general average less than 2.00 over 4.00 , should not be graduated. The same evaluation system is applied in Bioengineering Programme.

Facilities
The building in which bioengineering department is situated consists of one basement and 4 floors. Total area of floors is 1788 m2, total area for 2 classrooms is 125 m2, laboratory area is 889 m2, the area for ateliers is 121m2 and the area for general use is about 652 m2.There are 18 classrooms with a capacity changing between 25 to 100. The all equipments (projector, overhead projector) required for education are accessible in classrooms. The laboratories which are related within the projects carried out in bioengineering department, are industrial microbiology, bioprocess, molecular biology and genetics, protein engineering, proteomics and molecular ecology ,respectively.
Key Learning Outcomes ^
1 Students will have knowledge in mathematics, science and bioengineering and sufficient information about theoretical and applied knowledge in these areas. They will be able to apply the model to solve theoretical and applied engineering problems.
2 Students will be able to identify, formulate and solve complex problems. For this purpose, the student will be able to select and apply appropriate methods, analyses and modelling skills.
3 Students are able to design complex systems, processes, devices or products under realistic constraints and conditions, in order to meet certain requirements. For this purpose, students will be able to apply modern design methods.
4 Students will be able to select and use the modern techniques and tools required for the development of bioengineering applications, use information technology and at least one computer software program effectively.
5 Students will be able to design experimental setups to investigate bioengineering problems; they will be able to conduct experiments, collect data, analyse and interpret results.
6 The student will be able to work effectively with disciplinary and multi-disciplinary teams, and will have self-study skills.
7 Students will be able to ommunicate effectively, verbally and in writing, and will have knowledge of at least one foreign language (at European Language Portfolio Level B2+.)
8 Students will be able to recognize the need for lifelong learning, information access, monitoring and continuous self-renewal ability in science and technology developments.
9 Students have professional and ethical responsibilities.
10 Students will have knowledge about project management, risk management and change management. The student will be able to recognize entrepreneurship, innovation and sustainable development in business life.
11 Students will have knowledge about bioengineering applications in the universal and social dimensions of health, environmental and safety impacts, as well as in contemporary issues, engineering solutions, and an awareness of legal consequences.
