General Description ^
History
Based on the decree of the Council of Ministers published in the Official Gazete Issue 27405 on November 13th, 2009 with number 2009/15546 27 and the additional decree of the Council of Ministers published in the Official Gazete Issue 27416 on November 24th, 2009 with number 2009/15612 27 Vocational and Technical Education Faculties with 5 different programs will be closed after graduation of the current students but no later than 2015-2016 academic year. Within the academic institutions embodying the closed faculties, 26 new faculties with 3 different programs are established. Within the universities embodying the closed 21 faculties, (19 of which are Technical Education Faculties and 2 Vocational and Technical Education Faculties) 21 new Faculty of Technologies are established. 7 of these 21 Faculties were established with the criteria compliant with the current engineering education programs and were open to student enrollment by the academic year 2010-2011. One of the faculties open to student enrollment is Faculty of Technology embodied by Marmara University. With 11 academicians 6 different Engineering programs were established within this Faculty of Technology and 3 programs; based on 2010 Student Selection and Placement System (ÖSYS), for each of Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering and Metallurgy and Materials Engineering programmes 52 students of which 21 students from general quota and 31 students from Vocational and Technical High Schools were accepted

21 students have been accepted from the general quota of the department with the Student Selection and Placement System (ÖSYS).
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
Courses were taken from other higher institutions may be exempted through the decision of related exemption commission and faculty management board.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
During the engineering education 240 ECTS is required.
Profile of The Programme
The programme profile has to provide criterions for the Turkish Accreditation Board of MÜDEK (Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Engineering Programs); and later the International Accreditation Board of ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology).
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
There is not any graduate from the department yet. Since the aim of the department is to train Metallurgy and Materials Engineers with practical orientation, the employability of the graduates is expected to be high.
Access to Further Studies
Associate students can enroll the undergraduate program through the DGS exam. MSc canditates have to meet the following criteria, They have to get at least 60 points from theacademic personnel and postgraduate education entrance exam (ALES), They have to get at least 30 points from the interuniversity board foreign language exam (UDS). Average succes grade is determined through the following route: the sum of 50 % of ALES, 20 % of graduate finish score, 15 % of professional knowledge evaluation score and 15 % of interview score. All scores are considered for out of 100 points. Student in take for MSc is realised through a predetermined quota. This process is conducted through the grading of calculated average succes scores which must be at least 60 points out of 100. In certain circumstances, students are required to altend a certain amount of scientific preparation course.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
In associate and bachelor of engineering education, Marmara University Education and Examination Regulation apply. The success grade of student is determined through the consideration of midterm, final exam, homeworkk quizzes, projects and labwork. Evaluation criteria is stated in writing and orally by the course instructor at the beginning of each semester.
Graduation Requirements
Bachelor: Students must be successful in all undergraduate courses Students have GANO average of 2.00, Students must complete internship and prepare undergraduate completion thesis. MSc: Students have GANO average of 2.50 Students must prepare MSc completion thesis

Facilities
There are 6 faculty members and 2 research assistants in the department. Department uses the classrooms belong to the faculty within the department. There are Plastics Lab and Basic Operations Workshop. Laboratories in the Faculty of Technical Education are also used for the time being. There are several BAP projects underway and one SANTEZ project undergoing.
Key Learning Outcomes ^
1 Apply knowledge of basic, advanced science and engineering principles to problems in materials engineering.
2 Relate the role of composition, synthesis and processing methods to structure, properties, and the service perfomance of metal, polymer and ceramic materials.
3 Design and conduct experiments as well as analyze and interperet data involving materials applications.
4 Be able to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems involving selection of materials and applications .
5 Possess the skills to utilize modern technical equipment and computational tools in the exercise of materials engineering practice.
