General Description ^
History
Insurance Department of The School of Banking and Insurance was established at Marmara University 1996. Since its inception, Insurance department has been the only institution of higher education which gives four years of education in its field. Insurance department received its first students in 1997 with the exam by Students Selection and Placement Center. Insurance also gave its first graduates in 2001.
Qualification Awarded
All graduates take the degree of 'Insurance Specialist' as a Graduate Diploma who has successfully completed the required obligations by the department.
Specific Admission Requirements
University students must have a high school diploma. Moreover, they have to receive the required score in test selection. The term of education is four years and within the quota, English Language exam is optional for students who want to take the exam by the School of Foreign Languages. Furthermore, they begin to preparatory school, the others start from first grade.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
The recognition of previous learning, vertical, horizontal, and transitions in the University take place within the scope of the regulation which is ' TRANSITION BETWEEN ASSOCIATE DEGREE AND UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMS, REGULATION ON BASIS OF DOUBLE MAJOR, SUBSPECIALTY AND CREDIT TRANSFER BETWEEN AGENCIES’ , and determined by the Higher Education Institution. Students from non-formal educational institutions in Turkey may claim exemption on the basis of lessons and they are exempted from courses approved by the board of directors.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
Education period is four years at the Insurance Department. Students are eligible to graduate who have successfully completed all courses in the training plan which has a total of 240 ECTS credits and at least average GPA 2.
Profile of The Programme
The Department of Insurance educates candidates of experts and managers who can use technology and equipped with the knowledge about financial sector with courses and practical projects during their four-year undergraduate education. In the first two years, there are courses in basic sciences (economics, business administration, mathematics, statistics, etc) providing the basis for lessons in the future. In the third and fourth years, there are theoretical lessons which are compatible with the industry by the top executives. Thus, the candidate can have the ability to analyze and interpret the economy.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Insurance department’s Graduates can begin to work as expert at all the institutions of Insurance sector (insurance companies, reinsurance, agent and broker companies, etc).
Access to Further Studies
Candidates, who complete undergraduate degree successfully, can enter thesis and non-thesis graduate programs in parallel to the field of social sciences or in their field. By taking the valid ALES note and passing the institution's English proficiency test.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Students are obligated to enter the lessons and applications as well as exams. The attendance is monitored by lecturer. According to the academic calendar one visa and one final exam are organized.

The requirements which were mentioned in section ‘Eligibility conditions and rules’ before, are adequate.

Facilities
There are 5 assistant Professors, 1 Academic lecturer and 2 Research Assistance in the Department. Several rooms for each academic staff include technical equipments. In addition, a laboratory with 25 computers is available for students.
Key Learning Outcomes ^
1 Students are able to find jobs in fields which require expertise in the real sector and financial sector
2 Students will be able to participate actively in the management of organizations and apply theoretical information to business life.
3 Students will be able to observe and analyse general economic indicators and national and international developments in the financial sector and comment on them by preparing financial statements.
4 Students will be able to think analytically.
5 Students will have information about insurance legislation and social security systems and be able to comment on them.
6 Students will be able to identify the development of financial products in the insurance industry and offer innovations.
7 Students will be able to communicate efficiently in written and spoken Turkish; they will know at least one foreign language.
8 Students will be innovative and equipped with information from different disciplines; in addition, they will have high self-confidence
9 Students will be able to observe and measure insurance risks as well as identify the efficient protection methods.
10 Students will be able to carry out technical applications and marketing techniques related to insurance branches.
