General Description ^
History
Marmara University School of Physical Education and Sport is the second oldest school of its kind in Turkey. It was founded in 1967-1968 in the Institution of Education of Istanbul. Its aim is to educate up to date PE teachers for schools with the qualifications that are research based, peculiar, linked with aesthetics and its values. Also our graduates commit themselves to spread sport culture in society and to make their students physically active for life, to educate them at all aspects, mentally, physically, morally, socially.
Qualification Awarded
The Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education and Sport Teacher( first cycle in Physical Education and Sport Teacher) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum.
Specific Admission Requirements
Our department accepts students both with the ‘Transition to Higher Education Examination’ (YGS) and ‘SPhysical Educationcial Aptitude Test’(OYS) Applicants have to get the base point which is announced by our School of PHYSICAL EDUCATIONS before the OYS and they are supposed to be good at one sport branch and also adequate at another one.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
Program of Physical Education and Sport Teacher Department was prepeared according to the standarts of the decree dated 19/09/1997 by Board of Higher Education. Our program includes the same contents of other universities but also particularly has ‘Module Programs’ that give our graduates the opportunity of being expert at sport branches and different career areas.

Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the programme (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS).
Profile of The Programme
The Physical Education and Sport Teacher program is determined by the Turkish Higher Education Council and consists of 4 years and 8 Semerat. The primary goal of the Physical Education and Sport Teacher program is to educate teachers for primary and secondary schools in the areas movement, play and special exercise. During the study the candidates for the teaching profession acquire area specific and general didactic methods and strategies, processes of learning and teaching, specific materials, planning and evaluation skills. The student shall also gain competencies in Physical Education subject knowledge,knowledge of students and their characteristics, Pedagogical content knowledge, Professional engagement, as well as collaborative work and planning. The program introduces the student into Primary School areas as "Education by Play", "Movement Education" and "Fundamental Sport Education", and Secondary School areas as "Fundamental Sport Education" and disability specific "Special Movement and Sport Education".

A graduate of our department may find positions at the careers shown below: Preschool Physical Education Teacher, Physical Education Teacher For Primary Schools, Physical Education Teacher For Secondary Schools, Instructer At Higher Education Schools, Physical Education Teacher For Military Schools, Physical Education Teacher For Non-Governmantal Organisations, Physical Education Teacher Of Mentally Disabled Students, Physical Education Teacher Of Physically Disabled Students, Physical Education Teachers for autistic students
Access to Further Studies
The graduates holding Bachelor’s Degree are eligible to apply to Master’s Degree programmes at national level who have valid puan from ALES and foreign language exam, and /or international level both in the same and in related disciplines. At the Master level an specialization in "Sport Education" exist.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Exams are done in autumun and spring terms which are pratical and written exam in the form of midterm and final. Assessment criteria of exams are calculate midterm effection is %40 and final effection is %60. The Bachelor in "Physical Education and Sport Teacher" ( for primary and secondary schools) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed 4 years of the program and obtained a grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the programme (equivalent to a total of 240 ECTS).

Facilities
Our department, with its aim educating up to date PE teachers, has 2 professors, 1 associate professor, 8 assistant professors, 6 prelectors and 5 research assistants. A lot of equipments, venues that increase the quality of our education such as modern sport facilities, research laboratories, library with a wide range collection of sport sciences, electronic library which has a lot of visual sources of our School of PES are put into service for our students. As a part of Erasmus Program, our department has bilateral aggrements with the Universities which are pioneer of sport sciences across Europe. These aggrements give oppurtunity to our students having an international vision.
