History
The European Union Institute was founded to conduct post-graduate education and research in EC affairs on April 14, 1987, two months after Turkey's membership application to the European Community. The Institute is the first academic institution established in Turkey with a focus on European Studies. MA and PhD programs in European Union Institute were established by 1996.

Specific Admission Requirements
Graduation from an undergraduate program, a minimum score of 60 for the ALES examination in equal weight (Mathematics plus social sciences), proficiency in English via KPDS, ÜDS, TOEFL examinations or another exam that is accepted by interuniversity council (applicants who did not take these exams should take Marmara University School of Foreign Languages central language exam with a minimum score of 60). Being successful in oral interview. Weighted average: For Turkish students: ALES (50%) + GPA (20%) + Exam (15%) + Oral interview (15%) For Foreign students: ALES (15%) + GPA (40%) + Exam (30%) + Oral interview (15%)
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
Formal – For those students who do not hold a document showing their ability in English and apply to Institute’s graduate programs can enter foreign language exam done centrally by Marmara University School of Foreign Languages.

No qualification exam in MA programs.
Profile of The Programme
The Institute aims at supporting Turkey's integration process into the European Union through comprehensive research and teaching. Reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of European Studies, the Institute offers MA and PhD programmes in three sub-disciplines: "European Union Politics and International Relations", "European Union Economics" and "European Union Law". The Institute has engaged in close cooperation with various universities and think tanks from all over the world. It has conducted various projects in collaboration with the European Commission and within the framework of the research fund of Marmara University. The Institute has been awarded the title, Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence. It holds a Jean Monnet Chair, and, it has a significant number of Jean Monnet Permanent Courses. The Institute works in close cooperation with the European Research and Documentation Centre. The Centre holds the status of a 'European Documentation Centre' and hosts the official publications of the European Union. The Institute also coordinates the activities of the Turkish University Association for European Community Studies (TUNAECS) which is a member of the European Community Studies Association (ECSA). Access to Further Studies
Students enrolled in Institute’s graduate programs have the right toaccess to further studies, that is PhD programs, after finalizing their courses and being successful in their thesis. Students graduated from Institute’s MA programs will face the same procedure as the students from other department and/or university.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
For students enrolled in Institute’s graduate programs, examination evaluation criteria are given below: Midterm 40% (forty percent), Final Exam 60% (sixty percent). There is no Make-up examination.
Graduation Requirements
For students, who are enrolled in Institute’s graduate programs, to graduate from their programs, the conditions given below should be fulfilled: -Passing all courses, -Finalizing and successfully presenting thesis.

Facilities
Library of the Institute which is established by European Union funds is attached to the Univeristy’s central library in 2011. Therefore, students are forwarded to central library in their studies regarding European Union. The courses are given together with the help of laptops and projectors.
