History
Department of Primary Mathematics Education was established in 1998, first as students, including graduate students with the 2002-2003 academic year began postgraduate training programs. Since then every year until it opened nearly 60 graduate students and graduate degree programs are given. M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees programs, Department of Primary Education and the Department of courses given by academicians and consultants carried out. Applications are taken once a year in May-June is carried out by the Marmara University Institute of Education Sciences. Specific Admission Requirements
1. Applicants of the Master's program must have obtained a minimum of 60 standard score from Academic Staff and Graduate Education Entrance Exam (ALES). 2. Applicants of the Master's program must be a graduate Departments of Faculty of Arts and Sciences Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Engineering, Faculty of Education and the division of Secondary Education Mathematics Education, Elementary Mathematics Education and Computer Education and Technology Education Departments . 3. If students have taken Master's programs having in different areas licence degree candidates, they will be participate in the an Academic Preparation Program determined by the Board of Directors and the Institute's Department. If requiring more than 30 credit hours for the Scientific Preparatory Program, students will not be accepted to graduate programs.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
In order to apply to Master's program, the science faculty of mathematics or mathematics enginering or primary or secondary scool mathematics education or Computer Education and Technology Education license degree announced by Institute of Education Sciences is required to be received.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
Student must successfully complete theoretical and practical studies prescribed by the program. The duration to complete the Master's program with thesis is four semesters. The thesis defense exam is done within 2 months following the submission of thesis. At the end of four semesters, the student who has not successfully completed credit courses and seminar courses or even though s/he has completed successfully at the end of this period, the student, who has a weighted grade point average (GPA) below 2.50, is dismissed from the institution.
Profile of The Programme
Department of mathematics education aims to educate qualified individuals, based on contemporary approaches to the master program; aware of contemporary measurement and evaluation approaches, can arrange teaching activities according to the technological developments, can use different teaching methods and strategies in teaching process, can design a research determined to resolve any problem, recognize the scientific research and data analysis method and techniques in research design and can use them in data analysis as active and can follow the research in the field.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
They work as mathematics teacher in the primary school 6., 7 and 8. grade under the Ministry of National Education. They work as a consultant in mathematics education programs at the private and public education centers. They may instruct undergraduate and graduate courses at state and foundation universities.
Access to Further Studies
The students who have successfully graduated from the ELEMENTARY MATHEMATICS EDUCATION programme may apply to PhD programmes in the field of Elementary Mathematics Education or other similar programmes, in case they passed the ALES and English Examination.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
At least one midterm and final exams for credit courses and seminar courses of Master's program are conducted. The contribution of midterm exams to the success is 40% and final exams, 60%.Completion of the courses with success whose level is determined by the examination regulations (65/100) and a masters' thesis.
Graduation Requirements
Department of Primary School Mathematics Education recommends a thesis advisor for every student until the end of 2nd semester at the latest and this advisor must have been approved by Institute Administrative Board. Student, under the supervision of this thesis advisor until the end of registration period of the 3rd semester, determines a thesis topic and prepares a thesis proposal within the framework of the principles determined by the relevant administrative board and must notify the Institute of Education Sciences. Following this proposal's approval by the Institute board of directors, the student needs to present an appropriate work schedule to the thesis advisor and carry out this schedule on a regular basis. At the end of the semester, the student prepares his/her studies regarding thesis in a report format for follow-up with the approval of thesis advisor and submit to his/her advisor in a written form. Thesis advisor must evaluate this report as successful/unsuccessful and send to the institute via department head. In case the student fails to submit his follow-up report twice in a row or the advisor qualifies the student as unsuccessful 3 times in intervals or in a row, his/her registration is deleted from the Institute. Student in the Master's Program with thesis must defend the thesis s/he has written, orally in the presence of a jury within the specified period and in accordance with the rules. For each thesis completed, a jury proposal is submitted by the Department Head to the Institute and it is approved by the board of directors. Appointed jury members gather within maximum 1 month following the date the thesis is submitted to them and take the candidate's oral thesis defense. At the end of the defense, signed jury report that is “accepted” unanimously or with majority of votes within latest 3 days must be submitted to Institute. The student, who completed thesis exam and other requirements successfully, must submit 2 bound copies and 3 electronic copies of the thesis (including abstracts in Turkish and Foreign languages) to the Institute within not later than 1 month following the defense exam.

Facilities
Main Library in Prof. Dr. Orhan Oguz building in Marmara University Goztepe Campus and the library in Ataturk Education Faculty building are offered to the service of students. It is possible to access to free papers, books, doctorate thesis catalog via academic databases on university website. A connection with the other universities' electronic library databases is provided through university Ankos (collective-data browsing system). Free Internet and computer facilities are offered to the students at the Information center on Goztepe Campus.
