History
The modern age has added almost the entire new family members to working life. Parent of traditional family who can pass the time with children continuously, has left its’ place to caregiver, daycare or school. Thus, school’s importance has increased even further in the education of individuals seen as a future of society. In other words, school has taken responsibility for the education of children at least to the child’s family. The school has needed high-quality teachers having knowledge of the field and everyday practical knowledge, implementing and conveying his/her knowledge, internalizing positive values, having full of love and compassion, keeping alive the spirit of researchers and has needed high-quality, forward-thinking, hardworking and honest academics to train teachers and support them with scientific masterpieces. At this point, Social Studies Teacher Thesis Master Program was a program opened to gain advanced knowledge, skills and values to the teachers and scholars. Subjects in the program have carried out by faculty members having the title of Associate Professor and Professor who have proven himself in academic studies. Social Studies Teacher Thesis Master Program has started education activities in the 1998-1999 academic years for the first time, depending on Department of Elementary within the Institute of Education Science. The program has contributed to specialization in the field of Social Studies to the teachers who have a say in the construction of the next generation and teacher candidates, degree graduates who are interested in academic studies, research assistants who want to advance on the road of academic. Teachers have completed this program, gained the knowledge, skills and values, can be role model both to students and other people around them. These teachers also perform better while editing education and training activities carried out in class and outside of the classroom, guiding students, communicating with students’ guardians, solving a daily problem. Many graduates, completed the Social Studies Teacher Master Program, begin the PhD.

Graduates of Social Studies Teacher Thesis Master Program has gained “Expert” degree.
Specific Admission Requirements
To apply from domestic: The candidates who want to apply for Social Studies Teacher Thesis Master Program must have a bachelor’s degree or should be student in the last semester of a bachelor program for conditional pre. The candidates satisfying the conditions apply to Institute of Education Science in the application period with document showing the status of education, petition about to desired program and other documents requested by the board. For a master program candidate admission; ALES score, GPA and interview results are needed. The issues of assessment and interview assessment procedures and other documents required from the applicants and impact of these documents to the success grade, the minimum success grade, foreign language exams which recognized by YÖK (Council of Higher Education) and minimum language score determined by the Senate upon the recommendation of Institute. Entrance from Other Universities to Graduate Education: Research assistant working at the newly established universities may be appointed to master program without being subjected to reassess with the offer of university, opinion of the Faculty Member and Board for Training of researcher and decision of the Board of Higher Education. In Order To Apply From Abroad: For the acceptance of Turk residing abroad and foreign student candidates to Social Studies Master Program, relevant provisions of Regulation are applied. Board of Directors decides on how to evaluate foreign students’ adequacy of Turkish grammar to follow the courses. Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
In Social Studies Teacher Thesis Master Program, depending on Department of Primary Education Institute of Education Sciences, only formal learning is accepted. Students enrolled in the program have used their previous formal learning. This formal learning consists of the lessons that can take the master’s student. Students who were taken earlier any of these courses do not take these courses again. Students who have completed any of the courses that are included in the program as special students do not take the same course again. Successful students, who have completed at least one semester at another department of Institute of the related university or at the graduate program of another institution of higher education, can be admitted through transferred to the graduate program. Social Studies Teacher Thesis Master Program’s students must have completed successfully theoretical and practical work within the context of their courses for providing qualifications.
Profile of The Programme
Social Studies Teacher Thesis Master Program aims to grow students enrolled as individuals with academic and vocational qualification, teachers or researchers converting his/her knowledge into practice, use of scientific research methods, being independent in the classroom and outside the classroom; having academic qualification, reaching knowledge, solving problem and could overcome from complex situation which faced in the field of education. To achieve these goals, content knowledge and general culture courses as well as scientific research lessons referring to research students are also included. Almost all the courses have organized in accordance with new methods and techniques that students can make scientific research. The standard of education and training program is 2 years. The first years of this time period is the course period and the second year of this time period is the thesis period. However, this can vary in some cases. Theoretical courses in the program carried out in the seminar halls, classes and laboratories of the Department of Social Studies Teacher Education in the Faculty of Education located in the same campus with the Institute of Social Studies Teacher Education (Göztepe Campus). Theoretical lessons are not confined only classroom activities. Students guided to field by lecturers to make an observations, excursions investigation on the subject processed research. Our master students, already, have offered a lot of papers in national and international conferences, they have written articles. It is an example of their success that they caught it in a short time. Our master students are guided to variety of primary schools and are supported to do independent research as relevant to their theme by lecturers. Students who have completed the first phase of the program and have passed all courses can pass the period of the thesis. The students have the opportunity to work on any issue with any advisor his or her thesis. Our master students often continue PhD their education.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Students who have graduated from Master Program of Social Studies Teacher Education can work as a teacher of social studies in elementary schools. They can work as a teacher of Democracy and Citizenship Education and Principles and The history of Turkish Renovation courses within the scope of the teaching social studies in the primary schools or private courses. As these courses are both in the curriculum of public schools and private schools, business area of our graduates is wide. Our students typically consist of individuals who started the program after assigned to primary schools as a teacher or assigned to the university as a research assistant or individuals who have started master program without of any work after finished the license program yet. These students find an opportunity to work as a researcher, student assistant or teacher. For example they can work in different part of the university as a part-time working student or in a course promoting education in primary school students’ classrooms activities and in a public or private elementary schools under the Ministry of National Education as a teacher, or they can find a job as a research assistant at the university if they fulfill the requirements. If not possible finding jobs in their study field, they can find jobs as a clerk in the state institution required condition of being a 4-year baccalaureate degree. These people can pass their own areas five years after through transition between institutions defined in the rules of law. Graduates who possess the necessary conditions may be assigned the universities in Turkey as a research assistant for a PhD under the ÖYP (Academician Education Programme).
Access to Further Studies
The graduates access to doctoral programs. It has some conditions. Candidates must have an undergraduate or graduate degree to apply for the PhD. Also they must have ALES score in the 55 refers to the program (undergraduate diploma applicants, 70) determined by related Senate not less than the standard ALES standard score points. In addition to these rules, if necessary license and/or graduate grade point average and result of interview can also be evaluated for matriculation of doctoral program. The issues of assessment and other documents required candidates to provide for admission (reference letters, essay stating why you want to do a PhD, the international standard exams, etc.) are specified regulations issued by the Senate. However, candidates of doctoral program must have at least 55 points in ÜDS or get a score equivalent of these points accepted by the Interuniversity Board. Foreign students who want to take a PhD must have at least 55 points in ÜDS one of the English, French and German languages provided that outside of their native language or get a score equivalent of these points accepted by the Interuniversity Board. the university senates have authorized in this issue of raising the minimum scores according to the characteristics of programs to be entered in. How much weight will be taken consideration of ALES provided that is not less than 50% determined by the Senate. University may accept the students with only ALES score. The scores considered the equivalent of ALES and declared by the Council for Higher Education upgraded with the decisions of the senate of university. Also, The Board of Higher Education declares the conditions of acceptance for the students appointed by the ÖYP (Academician Education Programme).
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Students enrolled in Social Studies Teacher Thesis Master Program must continue to at least 70% of theoretical courses, and 80% of practical application courses. When they do not continue the course, students cannot enter the final exam of it. The class attendence has monitored by the Department and supervised by the Directorate of Institute. Each faculty member notifies students who did not satisfy the requirements for continued to the Institute at the end of each semester. Exams are fort he courses continued. At least one midterm exam grade is given for each course on the basis of the semester. Midterm grade may be given not only as a result of written and / or oral examination but given assignments and / or the student's participation in the class. The number of midterm exams determined by the Board. Final Exams are made in writing within the specified time of Institute's academic calendar. Examination documents are kept for five years by the Institute. To be successful in a credit course, students’ pass mark must have at least 65 points a total of 100 points over. The grade of a course is determined by evaluating together midterms or final exam point average. The effect of midterm exam on success score is 40% but final exam on it is 60%. There are no make-up exams at the Institutes.
Graduation Requirements
Students enrolled in the program must fulfill certain conditions in order to graduate. One of the conditions is as follows: Students enrolled in Social Studies Teacher Thesis Master Program must continue to at least 70% of theoretical courses, and 80% of practical application courses in the curriculum. The class attendance has monitored by the Department and supervised by the Directorate of Institute. Each faculty member notifies students who did not satisfy the requirements for continued to the Institute at the end of each semester. Repeating the courses if continue requirements have, condition of continued whether re-searched again determined by Board. Students who have fulfilled the condition to continue theoretical and practical classes, enter a mid-term exam and 1 final exam in each academic period. The effect of midterm exam on success score is 40% but final exam on it is 60%. Assessment of some courses are not only those examinations but also assignments and projects can be made. To be successful in a credit course, students’ pass mark must have at least 65 points a total of 100 points over. The grade of a course are converted to letter grades coefficient of success according to the rules specified by the Senate. In the applied courses, the weight of the application is determined by the relevant Board. for Social Studies Teacher Education Master's graduate, GPA (GPA) must be at least 2.5. Students with scores below this period do not pass the thesis. Students, who completed the work, submit the thesis to advisors. They defended thesis with a defense attended by consultants and jury, sometimes, participation of teachers and students of the institute. They entitled to graduate if they submit their theses and have the average grade being at least 2,5.

Facilities
Students, enrolled in Social Studies Teacher Thesis Master Program, attend classes in the Ataturk Faculty of Education where located Bachelor of Social Science Education Program in Göztepe Campus. Department serves them two classes and a seminar room the whole projection. There are one projection devices and Tables have a U-shaped seating arrangement in seminar hall. To carry out theoretical lessons, space is sufficient for students generally but in case of need, computer labs, classrooms with amplifier and the conference and sports facilities belonging to other branches of department within the primary section on campus can be used by master students. Also, our graduate students gain some opportunities in their academic and daily lives. For example, students can get face to face counseling service on certain days of the week from an adviser of class or instructor. Also, 10 research assistants guide them throughout the academic process all matters. Although at the beginning of the academic studies, they have published in national and international studies. Faculty of Education in which Department provides services is built in the central area of Istanbul named Kadıköy. So, it provides a lot of advantages to our students. International libraries in which they can explore the issues of primary sources, classrooms and study centers providing job for them, variety of institutions and primary schools where they can carry out many research located nearby. Also, cultural activities held in common contribute to their development. Campus of faculty available our students some advantages. Firstly, it has two libraries with a comprehensive literature review. These libraries offer student a decent working environment and an extensive literature. Students also benefit from decent cafes, mess hall that offers lunch and dinner very convenient and healthy way, gym, student dormitory and much more on campus. Congresses, symposia, workshops, etc., organized by the Department of Social Studies Education contributes to graduate students to gain academic encouraging.
