History
The ''Department of English Language Teaching'' was founded as a part of the ''Foreign Language Teaching Department'' at Atatürk Education Faculty. The teaching staff included the teachers of both ''Istanbul Atatürk Yüksek Öğretmen Okulu [İstanbul Atatürk Higher Teacher Training School])'' (4 years) and ''Moda Yabancı Diller Yüksek Okulu [Moda Foreign Languages Higher Education School]'' (3 Years) and they were united later in the department of ''Ingiliz Dili ve Eğitimi Anabilim Dalı' [English Language Teaching Department]'. Soon after, the department was supported by the academic staff recognised by YÖK (Yüksek Öğretim Kurulu) HEC (Higher Education Council). Since 1995 the department was named "English Language Teaching" and after 1998 it was renamed as ''İngiliz Dili Eğitimi Anabilim Dalı''. Atatürk Education Faculty has been one of the oldest teacher-training insstitutions in Turkey. As a result of drawing from its distinguished past, and by means of continuous improvement and expansion, the Faculty has succeeded in becoming a leading school of its kind and one of Turkey's most important sources of new teachers. With nearly 8,000 students and around 220 teaching faculty members, the Faculty is located at Goztepe Campus, which istself spread over a 15 acre site on the Anatolian side of Istanbul.
Qualification Awarded
The proramme offeres an MA degree to its graduates. For graduation, writing up a graduation thesis is a requisite.
Specific Admission Requirements
For the admission to the Master's programme, primarily a BA (Bachelor's Degree) is required. Along with this degree, a passing grade of 60 % from the ALES (Selection Examinatiom for Academic Personnel and Graduate Studies); 15 % from theoretical knowledge test, 20 % from GPA and 15 % from oral assessment are required. The candidates have to prove their academic level in English through the KPDS and TOEFL.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
Undergraduate study for the graduate study and graduate study for the PhD is required. Candidates who desire to apply for the graduate programme are to have a BA degree and candidates who desire to apply for the PhD programme are to have an MA programme.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
The master programme compriseses two years. The first year includes theoretical and practical course and the second year consists of the preparation and writing up stage for the thesis. In the first term, there are four academic courses and in the second term there are five academic courses. Students need to obtain 12 credits ( 30 ECTs) throughout the study. The theoretical courses include Second Language Acquisition Theories,(SLA), Socio-linguistics, Approaches and Methods in Foreign Language Teaching, Research Methods in EFL, Statistics in EFL in the first term. In the second term, the courses are Curriculum Design and Evaluation, Assessment and Evaluation in EFL, SLA Research Studies, Language Teaching Skills in EFL and Seminar. For obtaining the degree, the completion of theoretical and practical courses, completion of the thesis, submitting the thesis in time, successful defense for the thesis, and succeeding in the defense are the required aspects.
Profile of The Programme
The programme includes two years and has highly academic standards covering SLA studies, research methods, issues related to sociolinguistics, curriculum design and evaluation, and applied linguistics. The aim of the programme is to donate the candidates with necessary academic and theoretical knowledge and practical concerns regarding SLA and its applications to provide necessary qualifications for the expertise.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Students who complete the programme and obtain the MA degree can work as English teachers , administrators, programme designers, translators and testing experts in different institutions where the Ministry of Education is in charge of. They can also work in higher education institutions and private institutions as instructors, lecturers, administrators, programme designers and translators. They can also runtheir own language schools or translation offices. They can also work as academics in private or state universities starting as research assistants or instructors. There might be many other opportunities for the graduates both in private and state sector as employees or administrators.
Access to Further Studies
For MA programmes there is an access to PhD programmes which means, after graduation the graduates can apply for PhD programmes both at home and abroad if required conditions are fulfilled. After graduation from the PhD programme, candidates can apply for a post-doctoral programme at home and abroad as well. Along with PhD programmes, candidates can also apply for EdD programmes at home and abroad.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
The evaluation is performed through mid-term exams (out of 40%) and final exams (out of 60%). The final average is to be 2.50 out of 4 at the end of two years. For mid-term exam, projects, research studies, or presentations can be assigned. Students can work individually or in groups. Projects and research papers are presented in class. There are specific evaluation criteria for the presentations. Students are expected to write academic papers about the research they conduct in the field, which can be primary, secondary or or higher education institutions.
Graduation Requirements
Completion of coursework, getting passing grades from the courses, writing up the thesis, and thesis defense within the required time period consist of the requirements. The required score as the passing grade is 2.50.

Facilities
The main campus of Atatürk Education Faculty is located in a central location on the Anatolian side of Istanbul, one of the most important metropolitan cities in the world. Thus, compared to the students of other universities of Turkey, our students have the great advantage of getting much easier access to all kinds of social, cultural, educational and sporting activities. These opportunities enhance our students’ cognitive, affective and psycho-motor development. The Department of English Language Teaching has an ERASMUS student exchange program at the undergraduate level with a number of universities in the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany and Poland. Prospective teachers who fulfill the necessary requirements will be eligible to apply for admission to a double major programme.
