Our program; teacher education of mentally handicapped, received first students in 2002-2003 education year and started education programs in order to educate teachers which are needed in the area of special education. with this start, our program had the title of being first in mentally handicapped education programs in Istanbul

Students successfully completed the Teacher of Mentally Handicapped MA program gets the degree of Master of Science
Specific Admission Requirements
Candidates who apply to our program, should have the prerequisites, listed below For the 2010-2011 education year, the evaluation of performance percentages were defined as the below. ALES 50%, Scientific Evaluation 30% Interview 10% Transcript 10% According to the exams and other evaluations, the first five applicants are accepted to the program
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
Any graduate from four year university programs without field restriction can apply to teacher education master program
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
A candidate who have a degree other than education faculty and does not have a pedagogical formation, is subjected to two semesters of Scientific Preparation Program. Candidates who completed scientific preparation program, start M.A. courses. Courses in the scientific preparation program are listed below: Individualized Education Programs, Educational and Behavioral Evaluation, Literature Instruction, Applied Behavior Analysis, Daily Life and Social Skills Instruction to Mentally Handicapped, Turkish Instruction for the Mentally Handicapped, Acquisition of Communication Skills to Mentally Handicapped, Math Instruction for the Mentally Handicapped, Skill and Concept Instruction to Mentally Handicapped, Autistic kids, Specific Learning Disabilities.
Profile of The Programme
Aim of this program is to increase the information access , evaluation of information, practice and professional proficiency. The courses in our program are listed below. Educational Statistics, Applied Individualized Educational Programs, Single Subject Research Methods, Seminar, Diagnose and Assessment Methods with Mentally Handicapped, Specific Learning Disabilities, Guidance to Family of the Handicapped, Applied Instruction of Mentally Handicapped, Applied Inclusion Education with the Mentally Handicapped, Qualitative Educational Methods in Special Education.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Candidates who get his/her degree from Teacher of the Mentally Handicapped MA program, can work in private or public sector in the related fields. In public sector; Primary Schools, Guidance and Research Centers, in private sector; rehabilitation centers, guidance centers as a teacher or specialist.
Access to Further Studies
Graduates from the teacher of the mentally handicapped MA program, can be accepted to the doctoral programs about special education and related fields (within the restricted fields), when fulfill the prerequisites. Graduates can apply to the doctoral programs on Psychological Consultation and Guidance, Assessment and evaluation in education, Teacher of the Preschool Program, Psychology, Educational Programs and Instruction, Adult Education, Education Management, and audit.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Registered students of the MA program of teacher of the mentally handicapped, in order to be counted as succesfull from the course offered, must get at least 65 or higher points from 40% of the midterm and 60%of the final and attend to all courses. Also it's been taken into accout of by our department to consititue the courses of MA program of teacher of the mentally handicapped, both theoretical and applied
Graduation Requirements
Candidates who attend and get at least 65 points from courses presented to him/her and complete the Master thesis and defend on a jury have the right to graduate. A student who is succesful in the thesis exam, has the responsibility of submitting at least two hardcopy and three digital copy of full thesis with Turkish and English abstracts to the institute. MA certificate and is given to the student whose thesis is approved by the Institute. A degree form is given without addition, as the MA certificate is prepared. Tez sınavında başarılı olan öğrenci, yüksek lisans tezinin ciltlenmiş en az iki kopyasını ve tezin tamamı ile Türkçe ve yabancı dilde özetlerini içeren üç adet elektronik kopyasını, tez sınavına giriş tarihinden itibaren bir ay içinde ilgili Enstitüye teslim etmekle yükümlüdür. Enstitüce, tezi şekil yönünden uygun bulunan yüksek lisans öğrencisine yüksek lisans diploması ile diploma eki verilir. Diplomanın aslı hazırlanıncaya kadar diploma yerine geçen çıkış belgesi verilebilir; ancak, diploma eki verilmez.

There's a seminar room for the use of MA program of Teacher Education of Mentally Handicapped with the capacity of 16 individuals. Also in our faculty 12 computer labs are at the service of students which all have internet access. Also a library for the use of students in our faculty is present.

1 Defines, compares and interprets approaches about mentally handicapped children’s education.
2 Explains, interprets and evaluates with jugemental thinking, different and new opinions about his/her field.
3 Applies strategies, methods and tecniques for the education of mentally handicapped children.
4 Explains and applies assessment and evaluation instruments which are used in the assessment of mentally handicapped students.
5 Plans, applies and evaluates reading and writing instrucitons that are applicaple to individual qualities of mentally handicapped children.
6 Develops education plans and suitable for individual differences.
7 Follows the developments in education technologies, and by this direction; prepares and performs education environments which are suitable for the goals of special education
8 By also using new information about the mentally handicapped children’s education, applies what he/she learns to new environments according to changing needs
9 During interdisciplinary and intradisciplinary team studies, gives necessary decisions, makes organizations and evaluates the environment.
10 Understands, interprets and evaluates with jugemental thinking, the scientific studies about his/her field.
11 By using scientific methods; designs, conducts and reports scientific studies about his/her field.
12 During the interactions with individuals, environment and society, makes conrtibutions to special education, children with special education needs and their families.
13 Chooses, criticizes and makes conclusions from new information sources, about mentally handicapped children’s education.
14 Conducts studies and practises about inclusion.
15 Guides mentally handicapped children’s families, teachers, administrators and other individuals about the topics of his/her field.
