General Description ^
History
Health Science Institute Graduate Program has been established on July 20, 1982 for the purpose of education by delegate legislation number 41. The master and PhD programs have commenced in spring of 1982-3 in the departments of Faculty of Pharmacy. The Master program (with thesis) in Pharmacognosy, has been appertained to Institute of Health Sciences, was established in academic year 1989-1990.
Qualification Awarded
By the achievement of the program, the title "Master of Science" is assumed.
Specific Admission Requirements
The students have to comply with the regulations of postgraduate education and training. Pharmacist (4 years), Medical Doctor, Biologist /Molecular Biologist, Chemical Engineer, Chemistry oriented. The students have to pass the "Academic Staff and the graduate Entry Examination" with the score equivalent to or greater than 60. The students have to succeed in scientific assessment and interview.

The students have to succeed in all courses of Master program and Master thesis completion exam applied by an academic assessment commitee.
Profile of The Programme
The program aims to educate students who enroll in this program with the principles of general Pharmacognosy topics (physical and chemical properties, formulas, obtaining, quantitation of active compounds of natural products), research topics , contemporary education topics and enables them to work as self-researchers and participate in research projects.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Students who complete this program can work in the Ministry of Health, General Directorate of Drug and Pharmacy, Drug Industry, Health Institutes (such as Refik Saydam), in Clinical Trials in Pharmaceutical companies. Opportunity to carry on his/her academic career in state and private universities or to be employed as a herbal medicine consultant
Access to Further Studies
Upon successful completion of Master’s graduate degree, candidates may start to PhD program in case they take the current note from ALES (Academic Pesonel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam) and foreign language proficiency test (UDS, etc.)
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
To quality in the courses by• 40% - Midterm evaluations (exams, projects, papers, etc)• 60% - Final exams, homework and projects. Graduate thesis has to be evaluated satisfactory by the academic jury.

Facilities
The students are able to access to the scientific databases (ScienceDirect,Pubmed,Springerlink,WOS). The department's research laboratory is well equipped with modern instruments ( Rotary evaporator, Ash oven, UV lamb, WHO monographs and European Pharmacopoeia). Master theses may be supported by Marmara University Scientific Research Projects Commission.
Key Learning Outcomes ^
0 The students will gain the knowledge about methods of preparing medicinal tea and the cautions to be taken while using them (interactions,adverse reactions etc.)
1 The students will have knowledge about methods of application of aromatherapy and plants used in this area.
2 The students will gain the ability of writing, presenting and evaluating of scientific article, project or thesis.
3 Students will have learned the plant and drugs containing active compounds and chemical structure of active compounds in herbal drugs
4 Students will have learned the chromatographic techniques used to identify, purify and isolate the active compounds from herbal drugs. In addition, students will gain the practical skills
5 The students will gain the ability to isolate and identify the active substances in herbal extracts, herbal teas and phytopharmaceuticals.
6 Students will have knowledge about side effects and drug interactions, pharmacological effects and uses of herbal medicines and food supplement.
7 Students will have learned the methods of extraction of plant material and will have the ability to practice them.
8 Students will have learned the concepts of phytotherapy, aromatherapy, homeopathy, phytopharmaceutic, phytotherapeutic, herbal product, herbal tea and nutraceutical.
9 The students could identify plants in mixture of herbal powder by evaluating their microscobical and macroscobical properties.
10 The students will have gained the ability of preparing in standard of pharmacopoeia , making quality control of herbal drugs and products.
11 The students have knowledge about molecular genetic and its application fields in pharmacognosy.
12 Students will have knowledge about phytotherapeutics and herbal slimming products used for colds, immune system , cardiovascular system, liver and biliary system, digestive system, nervous system and urinary system disorders with gynecology, rheumatology,dermatology,oncology, geriatrics and diabetes
13 Students will have knowledge about homeopathy and homeopathic remedies.
14 The students have knowledge about plants used in cosmetics, their active contents and cautions that must be taken while using them.
