General Description ^
History
Health Science Institute Graduate Program has been established on July 20, 1982 for the purpose of education by delegate legislation number 41. The master and PhD programs have commenced in spring of 1982-3 in the departments of Faculty of Pharmacy. The master program has commenced on April 10, 1991 in Pharmaceutical Toxicology Department.
Qualification Awarded
Students who successes fully complete the program gain a Master degree in General Toxicology.
Specific Admission Requirements
• Pharmacist, Medical Doctor, Dentist, Veterinarian, Biologist, Molecular Biologist, Geneticist and Food Engineer, Environmental engineer, Chemical Engineer, Chemistry oriented. • Minimum 60 points from ALES (Academic Graduate Entrance Examination) in mathematics, minimum 65 points in Foreign Language Exam (ÜDS) or Public Staff Evaluation Exam (KPDS). To be successful in Scientific Evaluation and interview.

It is necessary to complete the course successfully and to pass the exams, to defend thesis successfully in front of jury and to obtain adequate evaluation from the jury.
Profile of The Programme
The program aims to educate students who enroll in this program with the principles of general Toxicology topics, research topics , contemporary education topics and enables them to work as self-researchers and participate in research projects.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Students who complete this program can work in the Ministry of Health, General Directorate of Drug and Pharmacy, Drug Industry, Health Institutes (such as Refik Saydam) , in Clinical Trials in Pharmaceutical companies, can be Pharmacovigilance executives. They can work in Forensic Institutes and they are capable of forensic toxicology. Since graduates are capable of evaluating toxic and hazardous effects of chemicals they can also work in corporations of Environment and Industry to assess exposures through air and water or can work in the field of Ecotoxicology as toxicologists.
Access to Further Studies
Upon successful completion of a master's degree, graduates may apply to doctoral programs in their fields or in multi-disciplinary areas provided that they scored enough points at the ALES test and have English language competency; and are accepted if they are successful in the interview.

To quality in the courses by • 40% - Midterm evaluations (exams, projects, papers, etc) • 60% - Final exams, homework and projects. Graduate thesis has to be evaluated satisfactory by the academic jury.

Facilities
The students are able to access to the scientific databases (ScienceDirect,Pubmed,Springerlink), relevant books, research, source and literature, besides the material and instruments that will be used in during thesis. A research laboratory and fluorescence microscope room exist in the department. Master theses may be supported by Marmara University Scientific Research Projects Commission.
Key Learning Outcomes ^
1 These subject will have qualified pharmaceutical toxicology knowledge which in highly needed in pharmacy sector.
2 They will have advanced knowledge on poisons, toxic dose, absorbtion, distribution, metabolism and elimination of toxic substances and toxicological analysis of chemicals.
3 They will have advanced ability and skill on adverse outcomes of interaction between chemicals and biological system and risk assesment and risk management.
4 They will have advanced ability and skill on biotransformation, mechanisms of action, toxic effects and isolation methods of drugs, besides industrial and environmental agents.
5 They will have advanced ability and skill on their responsibilities about monitoring of adverse drug reactions and drug safety. Thus they can have a part at pharmacovigilance department of drug industry, or at state and private hospitals.
6 They will have advanced ability and skill on pharmacogenetics, pharmacogenomics and toxicogenomics related to polymorphisms.
7 As well as teoric knowledge on toxicology, they will have advanced ability and apllication skill on preclinic drug researches, analytic laboratory techniques for biologic materials and their molecular analysis by sitogenetic methods.
8 They will be able to follow rapid changes in toxicology science, review a literature and research is reporting.
9 They will be aware of the safe chemical usage and the effect of different chemicals (drug, food additive, cosmetics, pesticides, radiation, industrial chemical) in human and environmental health.
10 They will have advanced ability on possible poisonings and causes related to natural sources which are consumed as food.
11 They will have advanced ability on characteristics of posionings, first-aid to be applied at acute poisonings, primary and secondary precautions, antidotes to be used at poisonings and the principles of antidote treatment.
