History
According to the letter of Presidency of the Board of Higher Education dated 23.05.2007 and No. 1829-012734 , it was seen appropriate to open a master of science program at Marmara University, Institute of Health Sciences for department of Biostatistics and following this decision master of science program has started studies with 3 students in the 2007-2008 school year.
Qualification Awarded
The person who graduate from Biostatistics master with thesis gains the master of sciences degree.
Specific Admission Requirements
1) to be taken statistics or biostatistics classes, 2 ) to be taken the Mathematical Analysis 1 class. (MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS 1: Real numbers, inequalities, absolute value, functions, limit, continuity, derivatives and its applications, graphical methods, undefined functions, inverse functions, inverse trigonometrical functions) 3) to be taken Mathematical Analysis 1, Mathematical Analysis 2, Mathematical Analysis 3 and linear algebra classes, (MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS 1: Real numbers, inequalities, absolute value, functions, limit, continuity, derivatives and its applications, graphical methods, undefined functions, inverse functions, inverse trigonometrical functions. MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS 2: Integral, logarithm and exponential functions, hyperbolic and inverse hyperbolic functions, indefinite integral, applications of integrals, polar coordinates, series, limit, continuity and partial derivative for bivariate functions. MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS 3: Real numbers, IRn vector space, IRn - Euclidean space topology. Multivariate functions, limit, continuity, partial derivative and applications, directional derivative, series.) Persons who fulfilled prequisites and graduated from ; - Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Statistics and/or Mathematics, - Faculty of Engineering, Department of Computer Engineering, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Department of Industrial Engineering, - Faculty of Medicine are accepted for the program.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
* According to Higher Education Legislation formal education is performed. * Students enrolled in the Biostatistics graduate programs of other universities’ may apply for transfers. * Students who are from another program should take courses which are determined according to approval of the Department Board.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
The program consists of major area courses of not less than a total of 26 local credits, a seminar course and thesis work. Students who successfully completed the courses and defended their master’s thesis in front of the jury are entitled to receive the master’s degree diploma.
Profile of The Programme
This program, is structured to introduce the enrolled student to advanced concepts, original research areas, research techniques and current education and training applications regarding Biostatistics; and to contribute to the education while preparing them for the doctoral level of education.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Graduates are employed as academic staff at national and international higher education institutions and are employed as biostatistics specialist at private sector; insurance company (as actuary), research company, pharmaceutical company.
Access to Further Studies
Graduates who complete master's degree successfully may apply to doctoral programs which may open in our university or other universities when they satisfy the required conditions such as ALES ve foreign language proficiency.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
40% of in-year assessments (mid-term exams, projects, article presentations and coursework presentations), 60% of year-end assessments (final exam); and master's thesis of the students should be considered as succesfully by the academic jury.
Graduation Requirements
To successfully complete the courses (at least 26 local credits), to complete coursework projects, to successfully defend their master’s thesis in front of the jury and to score at least an average of 2.5 (over 4).

Facilities
Scientific support is provided in order to reinforce the education and training of the students. There are laboratory with well-equipped computers with statistical package programmes, equipped library with biostatistics ans statistics books at the department.

11 To teach and inform students about statistical methods related to reliability and validity.
