General Description ^
Department of Medical Microbiology, Marmara University Faculty of Medicine was established in 1983 is located within the Department of Basic Medical Sciences. Medical Microbiology Graduate Program, dated 30.10.1984 has been to implement the decision of the university senate.
Qualification Awarded
Students graduating from the Graduate Program in Medical Microbiology earn the degree of "Master of Science"in this area.
Specific Admission Requirements
To have eligibility criteria of the regulation with the Marmara University's Graduate Education and Training , graduates of -4-year Department of Medical&Biological Sciences, - 4 year Departments of Biology and Molecular Biology in Faculty of Arts and Sciences degree program may apply to the program.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)
Formal learning is applied according to regulations in Marmara University's Graduate education. Successful students who have completed at least one semester of graduate programs in another department of the same institute or in equivalent institution of another University can be admitted through horizontal transfer. The courses the student while enrolled in a graduate program at another university, then a graduate program at the University which records the minimum course load is considered to be the case, the consultant and the relevant Department and the Institute's Board of Directors with the approval of the proposal determined by the Board.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations
Duration of the Graduate Program in four semesters. Program compose of total of not less than local 21 credits, minimum of seven courses, a seminar course and thesis work. Graduate study program consists of compulsory and elective courses. The program is 60 ECTS credits in total. One successfully completed the courses and practicals, prepared Master's thesis and defended in front of the jury, has provided at least 2.5 grade point average are eligible to receive "Master of Science" degree.
Profile of The Programme
The overall learning goals of the Graduate Program of Medical Microbiology: basic principles of microbiology including important microorganisms in medical microbiology (bacteriology, virology, parasitology, mycology and genetics of microorganisms), pathogenesis of clinical infectious diseases, to increase students' experiences in the laboratory of microbiology, to teach scientific research and to prepare students for academic life. By the completion of the program, successful students are expected to reach the learning objectives below: ability to follow the literature in the field of microbiology, understanding of the methods used in clinical microbiology laboratory, designing a research project, implementation, evaluation and presentation of results .
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples
Students become ready for Ph.D study and academic life. In addition, graduate students have a chance of employment in private laboratories, in various areas of R & D laboratories and the pharmaceutical industry (quality control, clinical research, etc.). Some of our graduate students are have the opportunity to work in the fields of public and private biology.
Access to Further Studies
Upon successful completion of a master's degree, graduates may apply to Ph.D. programs in their own area as well as in a multi-disciplinary area, if they get the target score in ALES and English language competency, and they are accepted if become successful in the exam and interview.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
Method of the examination and evaluation for each course is defined in a detailed manner in "Course Training Plan". In general, sum of 40% of in-year assessments (visa, homework, practicals, case reports, etc.), and 60% of year-end assessments (final, homework, projects, etc.) and the master thesis should be successful by the academic jury required.
Graduation Requirements
One should successfully complete the courses and practicals (not less than 21 credits throughout the program), prepare and defend his/her Master's thesis in an academic jury, have at least 2.5 GPA.

There are six Professors in our department, also two research assistants and two technicians work. Basic and clinical research infrastructure for studies in the field of microbiology and molecular microbiology are available.
